Kurt Cobain? You guys need to put that pipe down. I like Nirvana as much as the next guy, but Cobain's voice is barely adequate.

That's just like, your opinion, man.

In their prime, of course...

Female - Annie Haslam of Rennaisance. Miriam Stockley (most notable for her work on the Adiemus projects). Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance).

Male - Samite of Uganda, Peter Nicholls (iQ), Mandy Patinkin (Broadway), Jon Anderson (Yes)

His voice is awesome. Unlike any other. Check out the Unplugged album where he sang live, noteably check out Plateau, Lake of Fire, and where did you sleep last night. The vocals he uses on his rendition of Lake of Fire was completely powerful. And his rendition of Where did you sleep last night.

People say Christina has a powerful voice, Kurt gives me shivers down my spine.

Like I said - the "conventional" consensus on what makes a voice "good" is completely different in my mind. Most of the voices I hear that others would call "good" or even "great" are the kind that also make me sick to my stomach.

I'm a big Cobain fan.

I guess I mistook this thread as debating who has the best "technical" voices. Cobain is at the bottom of that list. If this is just a question of preference, then there's nothing to argue about.

Inigo Montoya? I had no idea he sang.

Same guy. He won a Tony Award for his portrayal of Che in EVITA, and he was also in The Secret Garden and Sunday In The Park With George.

He's got an amazing voice. I've tried to pick up his style as much as I can...he's one of a select few B'Way singers who isn't always over-the-top screaming and belting.

Best Female Singer: Tarja Turunen of Nightwish and Anneke von Giersbergen of The Gathering.
Tarja has a frieking amazing vocal range and sound. Anneke doesn't have quite the range, however, she really sings awesome.

Best Male Singers:

Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth ... One of the few artists I know that can do amazing singing and then in the very next song pull off amazing death metal style vocals.

Lemmy Killmeister .... There's a reason many people think this man is god.

Paul Kuhr of Novembers Doom .... Another great example of someone who can sing both normal and in the style of guttural death metal grunts. Not really in the same class as Mikael or Lemmy, however, IMO, Paul Kuhr is the best American male singer/vocalist.
