Best Low profile HSF for q6600

Guys, I'm a newbie so need all the help with this.

My current setup is an MATX (Icute Ibox) casing and G33m-ds2r MB with 7800gtx. My q6600 is running very hot in stock speed but my room is at 30C so this is probably one cause. My current temp at stock during load (prime95 after 10mins) 60 55 55 58. I already tried to reset my zalman8700 twice but still same temp.
So I'm looking for a better low profile HSF that is probably not taller than 130mm. Any ideas?

Thanks and regards.

That chassis looks really familiar, similar to the microfly almost. 130mm is fairly small. Case seems to me it's going to have a bit of a deadspot at the processor with the 120mm intake in the front and the power supply right behind it. Have you got all those 60mm fan openings populated. I'm avoiding just recommending a new heatsink right off the bat because if airflow is the real issue, just throwing a new heatsink in there may not help.

Just for something to keep in the back of my mind as we're going through this, Are you comfortable modifying the case at all or are we just attempting to optimize it as it sits?

Right now I have 3 80mm exhaust fans. My friend suggested me to customize the casing to create an exhaust at the top of the casing(on top of the CPU) and another at the side of the case(1 near the video card and 1 near the proc) but I haven't done it yet.

Were you to decide to modify the case, creating an intake on the top of the case directed at the cpu heatsink would probably be the most advantageous, along with removing as much of that very restrictive grating between the top area and the bottom directly above the cpu heatsink. That would also allow for a taller heatsink most likely.

Let me make a suggestion for heatsink like this. With the proper airflow in the case. and enough clearance, a heatsink like the scythe mini ninja or full sized ninja would probably be the best for a tower. There are others with SFF cases like this(specifically the microfly as I really think it may be the same chassis) that could give better suggestions than I for what precisely would fit.

sorry D*Art, not a microfly/xqpack clone. But it's a damn fine bootleg of the Aerocool m40. The only differences appear to be the front bezel vent/grille and the vacuum fluorescent display instead of a backlit LCD. (the carbon fiber variant bezel is quite fetching though) I can't find it for sale in the U.S. yet.

we've discussed the M40. http://forums.anandtech.com/me...ey=y&keyword1=sff+case

As far as mods for cooling,

1) regardless of what else you might do, cut the upper pan/tray and give the psu a clear opening to draw air from the lower bay. The psu fan may not pull that much air, but given that it's directly above the video card you'll want to give it as big an opening as possible.

2) as I said in the other thread, most of the higher end top-down blower cpu heat sinks(with fan) are probably going to be too tall to fit without some modding. You may be able to cut a 120x120mm hole in the upper pan to allow it to fit a Thermaltake big typhoon/Silverstone Nitrogen NT06/Thermalright XP120. The only problem is that if the cooling fin array isn't offset from the center of the socket or your motherboard has the socket located further away from the top edge, the power supply may get in the way. You would probably have to get some schematic/detail drawings and make some measurements of the board/case to figure it out. The TR XP120 is only 63mm tall, so of all of the down-blowers it has the best chance of fitting without protruding into the upper bay/tray. [Bad news is you'd have to get an adapter mounting bracket from TR because the XP120 is socket478.]

3) you could try a smaller tower cooler like the TR ultima90, AC F7pro, zerotherm btf90. Cutting another hole in the pan might allow a shorter tower type to fit. You'd probably be limited in the directions you could mount it, but a good 4 pipe tower sink should be able to handle a stock Q6600.
[if you're crazy like me, you could mount a noctua120mm tower inside a microfly. It takes a lot of dremeling of the cross members and prohibits using the removable m/b tray when done, but I did it. pics to come.]

Beyond the grill-ectomy and more radical cpu-sink, I don't know that there's much else to do. Mounting more fans may not overcome the limited heat transfer ability of the 8700, and the top panel of the case probably won't fit a 120mm exhaust fan and the PSU. Hope this helped.

[You'll probably be hearing from Skott soon, wanting to know how your 7900gtx full length card fits with the removable HD cage. ]

Are you planning to overclock or is the CPU unstable at those speeds? If no to both, then don't worry about those temps.

Zap,
I already tried to OC to 3ghz using 1.225v in bios and my temps are 71 65 65 68. Actually this is my original plan, to OC it up to 3 ghz but when summer comes here in Manila our room temp will probably reach 31c to 33c maybe more so I don't think my setup can't handle the heat so I'll be okay in stock speed since I will only use this for playing NWN2 and watching some downloaded TV series and probably some video editing. I already tried to run Prime95 for 8 hours and so far its stable at stock speeds. I'm still afraid to run prime95 for 8 hours when Overclocked to 3ghz. I just run prime95 for 1 hour at 3ghz and I did not encounter any errors but that just an hour.

gorobei,
I was planning to cut up the upper pan also to fit a TR Ultima 90 just got to make sure of the width of that HSF to make sure it will fit with my Odin gt 550w PSU. I have no problem with my 7800gtx in this casing but I'm not sure about the 7900gtx. Is it the same length and height with 7800gtx? But when I installed my odin gt I have to remove the HDD cage since my harddisk wont fit with the PSu installed. I was forced to mount my HD in the dvd/cd drive bay.
By the way that M40 casing looks line an icute ibox. Wow, the only difference is the lower vented area in front but I think everything is the same.

I've heard some good reviews of the Scythe ZIPANG heatsink, and it seems it fits in your case. I would be worried about getting cool air to it though.

Sounds like a plan to me.

PS. I have a feeling it's the other way around. the icute ibox looks like an M40 ;)

The Aerocool m40 most likely did come first. I went to their website a few days ago and browsed some of the pics. Interestingly they have some of what is likely an earlier version which has the psu located on the cpu side of the upper tray and some different cut outs. Since every review and the newegg photos have the PSU on the PCI slot side, it means there was a revision or two. Whoever is making the bootleg would only have the final tooling version with the psu on the PCI side. Since the Ibox only shows the pci side version, they are probably the ones making an extra production run with Aerocool's design.

OP: you'll need to add some extra length and width to your cutouts for the Ultima-90 as the fan mounting clips go around the entire fan as opposed to the TR Ultra Extreme 120 clips which go over the inside edge of the open corner posts.

Here's the start of my own microfly build. I'm pretty sure any SFF build with a 120mm fan H/S will only be able to point along the line between the CPU socket to PCI slots.

Your temps are fine. Trying to OC a very hot running quad core, in Manilla...crazy! ;)

Binky, your right about that. lol. :). I was just encourage with the oc of my friend's q6600 but his HSF is a Tunic tower in a mid tower case. I didn't taken into consideration that Matx casing is a lot harder to use for an overclocked q6600. But that's fine I'll have to make up with what I have right now.

Thanks to all for all the help.
