I am building a new Box (Wooden modification of an old AOpen tower) and I want it to be really silent!!
I want to ad a CD-burner that does not sound like a jet plane taking of!!! 😉
Any suggestions recommandations??
I know that a lot of people on the forum, are partial to the LiteOn's b/c of the excellent price/perfomance ratio, but what's their sound level??

Is there a need for 4 MB or is 2MB buffer enough?? Why did Plextor go from 2MB to 4MB??

Friend ofmine Justtold me the LiteOn 32x is the best CDRW on the market right now..
Better than the Plexwriter 40x I have
He is always correct 🙂

If you want low noise stick with LG, their 32X burner is slightly better then the Lite-On model IMHO... though not quite up to par with Plextor.
Impressively quiet though, definitely the quietest 32X burner I've seen.

I went through this about 3 weeks ago. Best Buy was not too thrilled with me.

First I bought a 40x Plexwriter. It was pretty loud.
I returned it and bought a 40x VeloCD. It was really, really loud.
I returned it and bought a 40x LG. It's still louder than I would like, but it's not so loud that I feel like dealing with BB over my third return (wouldn't blame them much for yelling at me... rather not put it to the test).

I'm a little disappointed that manufacturers don't list noise on the box. The VeloCD is ridiculous - it's fast, the performance is great, but you can hear that thing downstairs in our kitchen 40 feet away (you kinda have strain a little, but you can). If you have something that loud, it should list the noise in dBa somewhere on the box.

I haven't tried the Lite-on. I hear it's good. The LG is not too bad.

Rand, with my 40x LG, I'm a little shocked that this is as quiet as it gets. I like the drive. It burns fast, no coasters yet, great DAE, but I would hardly say that it's quiet. Compared to my old 24x CDROM that it replaced (which you could barely hear 5 feet away), I'm a little surprised. I know that they are spinning up the disks pretty fast to hit the speeds they advertise, but the noise on two of them (the first two) was simply unacceptable in my opinion. And the noise of the LG is barely acceptable (again, IMO).

if you really want quite drives i suggest 8x as you lose about five minutes in copy speed but mine hardly makes a peep the only time it does is on an unreadable cd.

at least imho
