while asus did have a linux for their s-presso series, that software is a bit outdated last time i checked. unless they came up with something new that works well with an external ATSC decoder, i'd like some suggestions on some linux PVR packages or a PVR/HTPC-distribution.

most importantly, i want to retain the functions of the front panel and have decent compatibility with different internal and external kworld ATSC tuners.

Not 100% sure on your question. If by external ATSC decoder you mean a card with hardware encoder they are better than software encoders as they don't strain your cpu.

MythTV is the best PVR bar none if you ask me and here is a list of supported cards

Here is MythTV screenshots

There are Several Distributions that you install and run through a quick configure screen. You don't have to install a distro and then myth - the distros include all the necessary drivers and remove unneeded bloat. MythDora, Mythbuntu, KnoppMyth, Minimyth but as far as I am concerned the best distro is LinuxMCE.

LinuxMCE:

check out the video of LinuxMCE and it shows the guy using it with a Gryo Remote - very cool.

Freevo is another one for Linux and there may be more but those are the only 2 I know of. Here are is a comparison on Wiki for linux and windows based PVR software

i too tried linux (Xubuntu) on a tablet pc that i bought off ebay (Mobits A221).

Biggest reason I had to go back to windows was lack of support for the touchscreen.

That LinuxMCE video demo was pretty bloody cool. I love the alarm system part. You set up motion detectors and cameras, set the alarm, leave. When someone breaks in and trips the alarm it takes pictures, then alerts you on your phone. You can see the pictures then have the option of disarming the alarm, calling the neighbours, calling 911, or talking to the person inside through the A/V system. Damn.
