If one has an AMD/ATI graphics card (e.g., 4xxx/5xxx series), what is the best video driver to use with X in Linux disttributions? TIA.

Err, the newest one? Fglrx is way more mature than the open source drivers, if that's what you're asking.

yeah i was using fglrx with a 4870 for a while. i upgraded to an nvidia gtx 275. the 4870 worked so-so at the time. x and compiz worked fine, video playback was hit or miss and dvd playback totally killed X.

id be surprised if any of the 5 series worked right now.

Supposedly one of the newest driver releases mostly fixed video playback. I think it's included by default in Karmic Koala, though he didn't say if he was using ubuntu or what.

I'd test it out, but at the moment all my computers use nvidia cards, except for my laptop with Intel graphics.

It handles video playback and desktop effects pretty well, but it barely supports any advanced opengl functionality. Certainly won't play games or run CAD programs.
