I don't do anything with TV, but I think xbmc is a pretty popular package. As far as distros go, if you're using something popular, software should be readily available. You don't have to change distros to get different software.

Did you run the software manager and see if there is a Mint package for XBMC already? If not, then you can add the PPA for the Ubuntu version and all should be good. You shouldn't need to actually download anything directly from the xbmc site, let your package manager take care of that and any needed dependencies at the same time.

Thanks Dave,I learned that, XBMC is its own Linux distro and is meant for media center

I'm not sure I completely understand, but you can certainly run xbmc inside a running Linux distribution. I am also running Mint 14 Mate (sometimes KDE) by the way.

If you want to install xbmc inside your existing Mint installation, just go to the software manager and search for "xbmc". You will find several packages that can be installed, but I believe the first match is probably a good place to start. Even if you don't want to stay with Mint + xbmc, you can still easily test everything out inside of Mint to see how it works for you. If you don't like it, just go back into the software manager and remove the package.

Just FYI: XBMC is a great media center application and I run it almost exclusively full time on my HTPC...

But!

The one thing it doesn't do very well is live TV. You need another live TV back end application running like Myth TV, and I can't speak to how well it serves as a front end in that regard.

So you think that nothing in the package of XBMC is at no use for me and i should uninstall it i only stream live soccer! how do i unistal the whole package?

Also When I watch videos, either on the PC or streaming, periodically the screen will start fading out to black untill I hit any key. Is there a setting somewhere that will tell Linux or the monitor not to go black while a video is playing? i did deactivated the screen saver and the power to never go sleep but so far no avail, can you give me a valid solution and easy fix appreciate.

I use a program called caffeine to keep my computer awake when doing certain tasks. Once installed, you can activate it from the task bar or configure it to automatically start working when specific processes are active.

im trying to get livetv on xbmc using my raspberry pi. from what i can tell so far, the easiest way is to use an hd homerun because it just shows up as a network device. you still have to have the backend installed though, and i havent got that far yet

Ok i did install it ,what i have now is a tool bar browse i like it but how i change the screen saver where is the control thanks?

Once you have caffeine up and running you should have a small icon that looks like a coffee cup in your taskbar. If you want to disable the screensaver, just click the icon and you will see what looks like steam rising from the cup which means it is enabled and blocking the screensaver. If you click again, the steam will go away and your power management will work as normal.

If you right click the icon you will get some more options. One is to disable the screensaver for a set period of time. If you select "Preferences" then you can specify specific processes that will trigger caffeine automatically. So you could add your xbmc or tv process to the list and whenever those are active then your screen will stay lit.

Thanks DaveStall:i downloaded the cafffeine but i disable the tool bar and kept the Bin Google Page, the XBMC i also uninstalled it cause i don't think there is anything i need there for my needs, besides i only watch soccer live streaming on line and my VLC player and Gerome Media Player are both efficient on video streaming. Thanks

Live TV in Linux also doesn't support encrypted streams via a cable-card tuner either.
