Get a 700MB CD(RW for the weary) and download the latest release of Knoppix. The easiest Linux install available. Heck, you can run it without even bothering to install it!

Gnome will feel sluggish on that machine, no matter what. Gnome is a resource hog. I suggest using something like Openbox or WindowMaker. You can still run Gnome applications as long as you have all the libraries installed.

Openbox or WindowMaker...they look nice... so they would run faster then Gnome...
How would one set them up in slackware?

go to /etc/X11/xinit/ and 'rm xinitrc' then 'ln -s xinitrc.wmaker xinitrc' after this simply 'startx' and go :0)

Debian/Slackware.

I would not recommend using GNOME though. XFCE/ Windowmaker (the latter was suggested earlier) would be my choices.
