Can anyone tell why use would use different firmware than that of your router? I'm a bit confused here, does this dd-wrt work with any router?, I have WAG54G and use WEP with MAC filtering. The latest flash I have on my V1.2 has WDS on the wireless side, what is that?.

Any help greatly appreciated

Some of the firmwares boost radio power, some give a specific new feature, openWRT is pretty much a full linux system. Mine runs a secure shell server, iptables firewall, a few other security programs.

It pretty much means you can do whatever you want with your router.
