If you are looking to eliminate the mouse pad or worries about tracking surface, while being completely compact in working space and porability, may I recommend breaking the traditional mouse and going trackball?
My choice for a travel trackball would be Logitech M570. Light, but only applies to travel and carry, usage (being trackball) there is not a worry about weight to lift and move.
The ONLY drawback is getting accustomed to using the thumb in manipulating the ball for pointing. A good solid 2 weeks or so of daily computing usage should be a good period to acclimate.
Bonus? No wrist strain. And you can use the pointing device ANYWHERE. Even in your lap, to the side in a chair seat, on a chair arm rest... etc.
