Mace/Pepper Spray I guess, however it may take you a while to reach for something like that if somebody is really attacking you. I would suggest just being confident and not scared, or maybe take some self-defense classes?

I plan on walking with her most of the time (every time that I can).. I just worry because sometimes I may be at school and she won't have an escort.. Thanks for the pepper spray suggestion.. The rapist is a tiny (5'3") lanky little punk.. If i get my hands on him..........

Guns and knives are not viable options..
I am sorry, I must have misread the title. I thought it said: "Best legal self defense tool?"

Luckily she's already taken the course (columbia university offers it's female students a wonderful self defense program).. Just a little extra protection never hurt anyone.. The fvcker has a scary M.O. He attacks from behind, covers the victim's face with a blanket and then drags them all the way to a local park.. Sigh..

It's very hard to get a gun license in NYC and I don't think my gf is comfortable with lethal weapons..

You will do nothing, because more than likely he is ARMED with a gun or a knife. I assume you are in NYC and that a gun is not a viable option. I hate to tell you, but pepper spray(the kind the average joe buys) is not much of a defense against a rapist with a gun or knife. I feel it provides a false sense of security.

Secondly, you shouldn't expect serious replies in every post to your thread. Some people like to be humorous at times(myself included).

Leather weapons? This sounds like it's more up GeekBabe's alley.

Make sure she knows how to scream bloody murder, at the top of her lungs.

Something to the effect of, "HELP! SOMEBODY CALL THE POLICE!" in a banshee-wake-the-livind-dead bloodcurdling shriek.

I know that if I am ever attacked, I would probably skip that step and regret it later.

Best free weapon? Her mind. She should always travel in well light, populated areas and w/a buddy (it shouldn't be too hard to find another person to walk w/if a rapist is known to be on the loose). If this means she has to change her daily routine so be it. Maybe she should take an advanced self defense class too. I mean, if the guy attacks from behind and traps the women inside a blanket it really limits yer options for weapon use until the woman is tossed onto the ground. But then it becomes a very close hand-to-hand type situation where pepper spray would probably do more harm than good. Plus, a weapon is only effective if the person knows how to use and is willing to use it (i.e. won't freeze up like a deer in head lights).

I have a retractable "spring" billy club. Also, one of those 6 D-Cell Maglites are nice. Then she'll have a light and a nice heavy "pipe" to crack that asshead over the noggin' with. I also have a 14th century battle flail (replica, but real-built). You know, the stick with 2 piked metal balls and the end of short chains coming off of it.

Very true. No amount of "self-defense" courses could prepare your g/f for a harsh physical assualt by someone of that nature. If you are truly scared for her safety, a gun IS the best weapon, but only with proper training. If your g/f doesn't like the idea of guns, does she like the idea of being attacked better?

Wearing high heels can give a nice kick for ladies. Strong fingernails hurt badly, too.
In my country, crossbows don't need any permissions. In NYC, I don't know.
