Best LCD (prevent ocular headaches)

lifeblood

Senior member
My wife has started to get ocular headaches whenever she works for any amount of time on her laptop or my desktop. However, she can work or browse for hours on her iPad. I've looked but not found any hard information on the iPad display versus a laptop/desktop. Does anyone know the differences or have links to where their listed? What is the refresh rate, panel type, etc?

If all she needs is a higher quality monitor to plug her laptop into, I can get that. She's working on her PhD so now is not a good time to start having these problems.

OK, I finally found some information. The iPad display is an IPS panel at 1024x768 @ 60 Hz. Its has 132 Pixels per inch. Her laptop and my desktop LCDs are TN Panels with about .27 dot pitch. How does PPI relate to dot pitch?

Could the IPS panel be easier on the eyes? Is it sharper? I know an IPS panel has a better viewing angle, but what else?

Anyone know of a good 20" - 24" IPS display that is easy on the eyes?

Apple uses IPS panels in all their stuff (except maybe iPhones, not sure on those). I am a programmer and stare at text all day (I play lots of games too). And I absolutely, unequivocally cannot stand TN panels. Text is fuzzy, viewing angles suck ass, and colors are horrible. I end up squinting way too much, and just get constant headaches. I moved away from TN panels years ago and have never wanted to go back. I always ask at work to get good monitors.

My current favorite is the Dell U2412M which is an LED-backlit IPS panel with standard gamut. I don't do color-sensitive work so I don't need wide gamut. I love this monitor. Crystal clear text, rich colors, deep blacks, zero viewing angle issues. It's just about the perfect monitor in my eyes. I probably come across as either a stealth Dell employee or a huge Dell fanboy cause I recommend this monitor in so many threads on here, but neither is true. It's just a really nice monitor that fits my needs almost perfectly and is quite affordable (~$300 on sale) for what you get.

the dell 2005fpw is ips and DIRT cheap on ebay.

Anand did a write up on these monitors years ago and they have the same panel as the 20" cinema display from apple.

they came out in 2005 before manufacturers realized people dont give a shit about quality components and iq.

I own 3 of them and just switched them into my studio. They still look amazing.
