I was considering these monitors, but I am open to your suggestions as to what would be better.

I would mostly use the monitor for school work and watching movies, but I do play FPS games occasionally, so I do not like ghosting.

I heard Dell outsources to Samsung, which may explain why Dell's monitors are actually very good. Wouldn't touch their computers, but monitors...I currently own 2. Plus, I have a 22" Samsung. Very nice.

Take a look at the 22" Samsung. Otherwise, the 22" Dell all the way. 20"....meh. 22" FTW!

This is the dell you want and sometimes it falls to $300.

Has the best panel tech SIPS or SPVA but as of late most users report getting a SIPS so that means you're getting a $500 monitor cheap because bulk Dell does. Meaning it's colors and viewing angle looks best. It's fast being overdriven, as fast as those cheap TN's youre looking at... I has best feature set HDCP, pivot, USB hub, etc.

So when you get the monitor, how can you tell what kind of panel it has?

I personally don't mind going over $300 a little if it means I can get a superior monitor.

Oh and about the panel type on the dells. Should I risk buying one of those 2007WFPs if I might get a crappy SPVA panel? Is there a comparable monitor out there if I decide not to take the risk with the dell?

It's not crappy compared to what you're looking at. namley TN's... And as of late most peoples are getting IPS in them so you have little to worry about. How you tell which panel you got is by entering the service menu..I'll tell you how after you get it.

Besides with dell you have 21 day happy guarantee paid shipping both ways..what do you have to lose?

I was originally considering this one, but now it has gone up in price. 🙁

No, Dell has a panel lottery. You get what you get.

Personally, I would go with the E228WFP if you aren't picky you won't really care cause when it comes to gaming (if you game?) the low response time is a plus and games still look terrific . And 22 inches of real estate for a sub-$300 price tag? Do it.
