I am looking for the best sub $700 dollar range lcd "NON-widescreen" not that I have anything against wide screen but I think the shortness of the verticle area would bother me...lol.. I have been looking at the Samsung 214T..is that about the best of the crop out there? I would like at least a res of 1600x1200 if at all possible in this price range. Any help would be appreaciated. Thanks

BTW.. this will be used for gaming and casual web surfing

They're more expensive than the widescreens anymore... look at the Benq widescreen from the mid-range guide on the front page - that seems to be about the best deal I've found, and it's just as high, pixel-wise, as a 1280x1024 screen and not much less than the 4:3 you want.

I use an older version of this monitor at work, and it is very nice:

(Edit - I see you mentioned this already. The only negative is that there is a large price premium for the 21.3" screen over the 20" screen. However I think the slightly larger pixels are much easier to see (0.27 mm versus 0.255).

You could also get a 24" widescreen display like this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824009061

and run games at 1600 x 1200 if they don't support widescreen. I've seen that monitor around the $700 price range.

i picked up a samsung 204b and i love it. it's great for gaming, and even looks good running at 1280x960 in games (scales down very nicely). the blue led for the power light sold it for me tho, hotness.

1600x1200 is my minimum resolution. I have a boxed Dell 2007fp sitting in my trunk right now, sending it back at lunch. Dell has problem on all their new monitors with banding and bluring. Plus Dell switched to a PVA panel with terrible viewing angle issues. I recommend a S-IPS panel. The only one of the top of my head right now is:

LG L2000C. I think it is the $500 range at Newegg.

I loved the 1600x1200 resolution while I had the Dell. I would not consider going lower.

Woah... the LG looks really, really nice. Any idea how the viewsonic and samsung compare?
