What is the biggest, best LCD display out there? I'm not rich, but just curious.

In April I saw one at Costco, don't remember size, but it was wide looked great; Was $6K.

Ooh, I'd say Sony, NEC, or Mitsubishi. I'm sure there's better, but that's about all I can come up with right now. Samsung also makes an incredibly sweet one that's about 25" large (goodbye TV!), but I forgot the price.

Best that money can buy is the IBM T221. It has a pixel pitch of 0.125mm. That's twice what the Samsung thing has. In other words, tha's a maximum resolution of about 3840x2400. It's only $8,399 too.

Here it is, the biggest, best LCD display that money can buy:

Sanyo PLC-UF10

It retails for $59,995, but you can find it for $40k. 7700 lumens, 800:1 contrast, 1600x1200 native. Can be stacked for close to 15,400 ANSI lumens. Max screen size of roughly 50' across, depending on lens.

That may be the biggest but not the best. The sad thing is that that's what movie theaters are using for digital projectors :)

That's not even close to what any of the theaters in the United States are using for digital projection (though I'm not sure where you live). All of the ones in the US use 3-chip DLP Cinema projectors with 1280x1024 resolution that cost in the 6 figures, with anamorphic lenses to optically compress the picture to 16:9 or 2.35:1. None use LCD technology.

I was joking and just meant to suggest that I don't understand how a 1280x1024 image can look good on a 50' wide screen. I think film has on the order of at least two to four times the linear resolution of these digital projectors (for film, 100 to 200 lines per mm on a 24x18 mm film image compared to an equivalent 50 lines per mm for the digital image).

Heh, you're right. Right now film definitely has the edge in resolution. If you're talking IMAX, then film will have the edge in resolution up until 4000x3000 or so. The problem with film is the degredation with each generation (digital has none), and jitter (again, digital has none). Because of this, your typical digital theater will give you a better experience than your typical film based theater on digitally produced pictures (ie. EP2). There are definitely exceptions though, and a digital theater can be poorly set up just as a film one can.

Right now, the best digital projector is probably JVC's QX1 D-ILA projector, with 2048x1536 resolution. It's extremely difficult to match the quality of this projector when fed 1080 images through a Teranex. You have to go up to IMAX to do it.

The closest digital theater is two hours away at the Metreon in San Francisco. I might have to go down there to check out Star Wars. I hope it will still be playing there for a few weeks.
