I'm looking to find a good laptop for college this fall. I want a relatively powerful machine that can handle most games that I throw at it without weighing me down too much if I decide to use it on my school's extensive wireless network. (ie 32mb or better gfx card) I have heard that the p3's aren't much slower than the mobile p4's and that they are cooler and give better battery life. I'm partial to Dell (we own 6) and I am considering the 4100 with approx (1.2 p3, 256 sdram, 40gb 5400rpm, 14.1 svga+, 32mb gf2go, for around 2200). It seems a little steep but I know that the reliablity is good (unlike some compaq's that I've owned) and it will last me a few years. any input would be great! I have about a $2500 max budget

You should probably take a look at this. (found that link in a offtopic thread this morning)

15" SXGA+, 512MB DDR, P4 2.2GHz, 40GB, 8X DVD/CDRW, 56K, Ethernet, Free Case, etc. for $1800. They're the same laptops that alienware sells. Damn good deal if you ask me. ;)
BTW they have a 64MB Radeon 7500 in them too... so you should be able to handle your games. I think I might have to replace this old P2 400 Inspiron 7500 with a Sager soon.

I would go with the Dell Inspiron 8200. You can get a very powerful I8200 for less than $2500. Remember when buying Dell's, get the memory and HD from somewhere else (Crucial, Newegg, etc.). My I8200 has been able to handle any game I've thrown at it. The only game that has a little trouble running at high resolution is Neverwinter Nights (it still runs fine at lower resolutions).

I strongly recommend you stay away from Sagers. They are very poor quality. The one I worked with had multiple parts fail.
