Hi,

I am looking for a laptop comuter for under $2000 after shipping and tax.
Things I want are:
Pentium 4-M 1.5 GHz or higher (I don't know exactly how the mobile Athlon 4 compares to the P4 on the mobile market as far as speed and batery life, but for a desctop I would defiently choose the Athlon so please suggest AMD solutions if available),
265 MB or more PAM, preferebly DDR or better,
40 GB Hard Drive,
and a very good quality display, pereferebly 15", I would prefer a display that has good quality and does not loose quality when looking at is from the side like most LCD displays. High resolutions on the other hand are realy not a factor.

Anything else is pretty much optional although I would like some USB 2.0 port is possible but not necessary.
Software wise, I would prefer as little software as possible as I already have everything I want to instal and I will most likely sormat any preconfigured laptop and intal my own OS and software from scrach.

So far the best deal I found was on a Compaq Presario 1500T and I would be greatfull for any of your suggestins.

Thanks

P4-M 1.6GHz
Ultra Sharp UXGA LCD 15"

64MB GeForce 4 GO
20GB HD (you can get a 40GB IBM Travelstar for $150 from Newegg)

Floppy
Win XP Home
V.92 Modem
10/100 NIC
6 months AOL or MSN

Thanks for the reply but the Dell Inspiron 8200 is too expensive as configured and even if I lower it to a 32 MEG GF2 GO and factor in the price of purchasing the 40GB hard drive the prise still is above $2000 before shipping and tax.

The Persario 1500T I looked at was:

P4-M 2.0 GHz
SXGA+ LCD 15"
256MB 266MHz DDR SDRAM
32MB Radeon 7500
40GB HD
8X DVD
Floppy
Win XP Home
V.92 Modem
10/100 NIC
Microsoft Productivity Suite
6 months AOL
1 year warranty

This would be $1700 after the $75 coupon code posted on the website.

The only problem I have is that it has the SXGA+ screen and I would realy like something like the Dell UltraSharp display but Dell offers many useless "free" upgrades and software to raise the price instead of simply lowering the price without the special upgrades.
Also the the graphics are not that important and I would be perfectly fine with an integrated chipset solution as long as it meet my requirements.

Thanks

Just out of curiosity, why do you want the Ultra Sharp screen? I have the SXGA+ screen and I LOVE it! There is actually a small flaw in some of the UXGA and US UXGA screens which can cause them to flicker when displaying certain patterns. The SXGA+ does not seem to have the problem. I can easily see mine from almost any angle. It just loses a little brightness when viewing from some angles.

I can't believe no one has suggested powernotebooks.com. I do not have personal experience with them but according to many people I've heard talk about them, they sell very well equipped notebooks for very reasonable prices. They are ranked #1 on resellerratings.com if that means anything to you.

I am looking at powernotebooks.com an they seem fine so far, thanks.

I'm just wondering, is there any real difference between UXGA and SXGA+ 15" screens other then the resolution as the 1400x1050 max is more then enough. And for UltraSharp, I am just looking at dell's info about it and they say that is much better espetialy from diferent angles, and although I don't realy trust dell that much I figure there has to be some advantage. I have not seen the latest screens for myself yet, but hopefully I will soon.

Thanks aggain.
