I have a Dell 8000 and have purchased some 4000's also. I love my 800 and Dells in general. A 4000 with two batteries would be nice. But, if he wants a really solid, well-made notebook, you ought to check out the great deals on IBM's here:

Toshiba Satellite 3000/5 series from $1499.
Add $149 to extend warranty to three years.
Add $288 (for systemguard) to extend warranty to three years and this warranty covers everything but theft or loss.
Use the remaining monies for a second battery (main or multi-bay).
Toshiba says one battery should last "approximately 3 hours."
The unit weighs 5.7lbs.
