Ok I am going to be purchasing a small laptop withen the next week or so and want help with specs and stuff.

The only things I do on my current desktop is, Chat, FTP file transfers for my xbox, Music, and a few other lightweight things. I hardly ever play games on my desktop as I have my xbox for that, & Burn DVD

My main requirments for this laptop/notebook is.

LIGHTWEIGHT- Must be lightweight Like 5lbs or less I would say.
HEAT- I dont want anything that gets to a point where I want to put it on a desk it gets so hot.
Battery Life - Doesnt have to be phenominal but over 3 hours during use is good.
Wireless built in - I would like something that I don't have to add a card to, I want the card to be internal.
Small in size, but no so small as to where it fills like a childs toy.
Must be well built.
Price should be around $1000 USD

As you can tell by my uses I dont need a powerhouse. I would like something fairly fast though, I dont want it to be a slug, but not a 2ghz either, celeron is fine. They arnt as slow as they used to be right?

I have been looking at the 12" Ibooks, but I have read that the palm rest on them get fairly toasty is this true? I would really like to get an ibook, but if this is true thats out.

What else would you recomend as far as X86 notebooks go?

Having a built in DVD-/+R isnt a big deal as I will add an external one, but a cdrw would be nice to have built in.

Thanks for all your input. Please give reasoning to your answers also.

Yea I was looking at the 600m as an option. I really like the IBM's but they are too exspesive for my budget, I know its worth it though.

Anyone know anything about heat issues with the new 12" ibook?

If you have Sams Club nearby you can get Averatec AMD Athlon XP-M2000+ for $950 plus another $80 for additional 3 yr warranty.

512 mb ram
combo dvd/cdrw
40 gig harddrive
802.11g built in
3 hr batterylife
4.2 pounds

Microcenter had same laptop for under $800 AR couple weeks ago but I don't know if that deal is still good. Bestbuy also had it for around $800 AR but with 256mb ram. What I like about Sams deal is that 3yr additional warranty for $80.

If you looking to get iBook, I would check out the thread over at Fatwallet. There's a link to educational deal you can get on it that can save you about $200.

Yea But how legit is that fatwallet link for the edu discount since i dont go to that school or anything.

BTW that avertec, I read good things about the 1.3 ghz celeron avertec and was looing at it, i like it becasue the speed is lower the price is about the same though, but i think it is lighter and has a better battery life. How is the heat on the avertec AMD? I have a sams memebership so getting one there is not a problem.

Josh

Edu discount is only supposed to be for students only but Apple won't know. But if your conscience bothers you don't have to use it.

The 1.3 Pentium M Avertec is Centrino. It's not a Celeron. Actually it's very good computer for under $1000 and has 5 hour battery life but it's too big and bulky IMO at 6.3 lbs and 15 inch screen. But it has all the needed connectors like firewire and usb2. If you don't mind bulker laptop this would be nice.

I don't own Avertec AMD one so I don't have firsthand knowledge of the heat. But everything I've read about it suggest heat isn't too bad. The prior Avertec AMD 1600 seemed hotter in comparison from what I've read.

I'm looking at maybe getting sub 5 lb notebook myself and am considering iBook or Avertec AMD 2000+. I'm leaning towards iBook cause of its double batterylife but I've lot more software for Window machine. But I wouldn't mind messing around w/ OS X.

I'd go with the Averatec 3220H.

Athlon XP 2000+ @ 1.67GHz
12.1" XGA TFT
256mb PC2700 RAM
40gb HD
DVD/CD-RW combo drive
integrated 802.11g wireless
56k modem
10/100 LAN

~4.3 lbs.

Best Buy had a deal deal with that laptop for $750 (after rebates from $950) a little bit ago.

I have the model before this (3150H) and it's very good.

Another vote for this one.... It even looks really good! (magnesium alloy case)

IBM makes laptops that feel quality. I understand what you want here. Maybe you can find a used one?

I have been looking at the 12" Ibooks, but I have read that the palm rest on them get fairly toasty is this true? I would really like to get an ibook, but if this is true thats out.

See if there's an Apple store near you and go see for yourself. IME I've found iBooks to be some of the coolest, quietest laptops I've ever handled. If these things had dangerous heat issues you'd hear about it. There are thousands of these in schools across the US - from elementary to college.
