Looking for a good laptop lock for a college student. Better than basic security, but top of the line not necessary, unless something really stands out.

anyone have favorites???

There are many locks available - but they are actually delaying devices. Most all can be defeated with simple bolt cutters.

And, here is what happened after a demo that beat a lock:

And, there is also available Lo-Jack for laptops which can aid in recovery and prosecution of a perp.

Kensington locks are fine for the college setting for your dorm room. Lock your laptop to your desk and make sure you lock your door when no one is in your room. The lock won't really stop thefts, but many people don't bother locking up their laptops, so if someone is going to steal one, they'll take the one without the lock (even though the lock is fairly easy to break.

We use Kensington Locks at our company. My observation is that the locks are not the weak link, its the plastic PC case housing that they fit into. I have seen more than one occation of when a good sharp tug can bust out the side of the PC when the lock is in place. Locks are to keep honest people honest...it will not protect you agains a thieve.

It's the truth.

Thanks, Lo Jack sounds great, I may go with the Kensington Replacement Lock tho...I realize I have to pay another $15 to renew each year, but they cover up to $1500 for a new lappy, if you report the theft within 72 hours to the police. Any other ideas?
