ill be gettin me a laptop for university soon, as i dont want the hassel of shifting my main rig. but i still wanna play all my favourite games

my friend has a 64mb Ati mobility 9000 and it plays generals pretty well, at a res higher than 1024x768.

but im seeing that there are 64 and 128mb versions of a 9600 mobility which would kick ass for definate.

Nvidias 5200 go and 5650 or 5600 go i dont expect to be much good coz their desktop parts are rubbish........but i remember seeing a GF4 Ti 4200 for a laptop and i know thats a good card for a rig let alone a notebook.......but do they make it anymore?

Probably not. However, there's an ATI Mobility 9600/9600Pro now available; the general consensus is that it kicks the 5600/5650's sorry tail all over the place. NVIDIA has some newer mobile parts coming out -- maybe in the next few months? But for now the high-end ATI is the best you'll find.

9600 mobility is the best bet. I'm not 100% sure, but there might be a 5700 from nVidia sometime, but I haven't seen anything about it.

Anandtech had an article comparing the graphics cards a short while back.

a 5700 part sounds good..........that cards supposedly a nice improvement over the 5600,
but i have ATI in my rig now, and im dam impressed with it.

a dx9 part probably isnt needed seen as HL2 looks like its got an infinite delay! and if the 9600 is the best i'd imagine its pretty expensive

what are the other/ cheaper ATI parts

(mainly for playin UT2003/2004 (dx7-8) and generals + other shooters)

Based on what I've seen from various different sites comparing the 5700 and the 9600, I'd go the 9600 mobility route (I've got a 9600 here, but no 5700, so I can't compare the two personally). The 9600 M does a much better job from what I've seen. My 2 cents.

9600s. I wouldn't even touch any nvidia moblie video, they suck up alot more juice than ATi's cards I'll tell you that!

that they do. also, the 9700pro moble is comeing out next month so that should drive prices down on the 9600 parts if you are willing to wait.
