Best laptop for $3000?

$3,000 is the limit my brother's school will pay for a new notebook. He said he wants a DVD burner (DVD-RW I guess?), and also he said it might have to be from either Dell, Compaq or some other...

What about Alienware? Or are they not worth the $? Winbook?

I ain't as keen on laptops as I am on PC's, so any input/suggestions would be most appreciative!

Holy crap, 3K$?? you can deck out any machine for below that almost....pick a brand, max it out, viola. dell would be good, gateway....

i myself have a compaq, its great....

For 3k, get a T40p. He won't have the DVD burner, but will have everything else a person could have in a laptop.

geez $3000 is a heck of a lot to spend on a notebook, you can get a decked out (pick one of the following) Powerbook, Vaio, Thinkpad, or Inspiron for that much...

Yeah, for $3000 the only one I'd get is Apple's 17" PowerBook (once it's updated later this month). There's nothing else I'd consider spending that much money on. Alienware's a ripoff BTW. IMO going with Dell or Sony would be better for a Windows notebook, as you'd be paying half the price for better hardware.

For $3K, I would definitely go with IBM T40p. It is on sale right now for about $3050. As for the DVD-burner, I would rather have an external one instead of a slow internal DVD-burner. Just get an external DVD-burner which will be much faster than the internal one. Most internal laptop DVD-burner max out at 1x or 2x while the external one max out at 4x and probably 6x or 8x soon.

I just bought one and I love it to death. For what it costs, it's hard to find a competitor that can match or exceed the features it has. Also, the screen is simply stunning and the keyboard is fantastic.

Tell him to get the Sager 5680, when it's released(edit😛robably around early august). It will be pretty massive.

Can you share more info about that Sager 5680 ?
