Best laptop for 1200-1400 dollars?

I'm looking for a friend who wants the best bang for the buck (of course) and I really don't know where to look.

So what's the best?

I just recieved my new Gateway 450 laptop the other day, and so far I really like it. Got it for $1415 including shipping, but I also bought it through school rather than Gateway's public site, so buying it normally may be (considerably) more expensive. Here is what I got:

Gateway 450SX4
Intel pentium-4 mobile @ 1.6GHz
256MB DDR-SDRAM
30GB HDD
8xDVD/CDROM drive
32MB ATI mobile Radeon video
14.1"XGA (1024x768 res) LCD Screen
Ports: 2USB, 1 firewire, sound in/out, Paralell, Serial, 15pin mini D-sub (to analog monitor), composite video out to TV, PS/2
built in modem and 10/100 Base-T ethernet
built-in sound
Windows XP home
Microsoft Works on DVD-ROM
Intervideo WinDVD
Carrying case (looks kind of like a briefcase, but it's soft)
6-cell Lithium ion battery
AC power adaptor

Like I said before, I'll have to check gateway's public site to see what this thing normally sells for.

Just talked a friend into buying a Dell Inspiron for about $1400 less $75 coupon, plus extra maintenance contract.
1.4 P4, Geforce to Go 32MB 20Gig HDD 256MB Win Xp big screen
Kinda heavy, but built like a tank. Right now he's traveling accross country doing CAD CAM (high end) with power plugged into converter. (Wife's driving)
1.5 hrs full use on batt.
Very happy with purchase.
Since theres nothing you can fix with a laptop - you gotta go with someone with good service.

Yup, new iBook is tough to beat for the price.

I would go with Dell. I really like my Inspiron 8200. The thing I like most is the fact it IS upgradeable. I can replace almost any part including the CPU and video card.
