Best laptop cable lock/theft deterrent? Do they work?

Now that I've gotten my new thinkpad, I'm looking for a quality cable lock. Do you have any recommendations? Actually, foremost, do these things really work? Are they hard to break, or are they only just a theft deterrent?

Thanks!

Dont know looking to buy one myself I guess I you pull hard enough you will just rip it out of the lappy housing taking 1/4 of the computer with it. Some laptop frames are magnesium aloy others a hard plastic.
Just a deterant though. A good pair of bolt cutters will cut even the bigest lock/cable

yeah i agree, they just work as a deterrent. my friend got his laptop stolen at school even with a cable lock and it took them just a couple of minutes to steal it. i think kensington locks are the most popular now. i know they make locks with an audible alarm as well. i'd probably recommend something like that.

A good pair of bolt cutters are about $25 for a $2000 laptop it's a cheap investment. But they are deterrents. It's giving me piece of mind at a hotel room, at a quality hotel I hope a staff person wouldn't have the time to cut cables and run with laptop but I'm probably dreaming. They do break into trunks and take laptops out of cars (happened to two coworkers.) The best way to cover your loss is to backup frequently and make sure your renters/homeowners will cover a theft of the equipment.
