best laptop around $1200?

primary concern: weight (perfer it to be ~5 lbs) and battery life (preferably centrino)

perfer for it to have a DVD player (dont care much about a burner), 12 inch screen is OK
i dont care about video card (it could be integrated as far as i care)
i dont really care about how much RAM it has either as i can very easily add more

pretty much any ibm.
when someone says "video card doesnt matter," the best response is almost always IBM.
the IBMs with bad video cards don't cost that much either.
I don't know if you can get one for 1200 though..

Try the sony vaio V505 series. they come in different configs and are really small and lightweight. Also have decent battery life

I don't think sony is a good choice, it's just that their price : quality ratio is not that great..🙁

Anyway, I found a good IBM for you, shady.
It weighs a bit more than 5.5 lbs and is $79 more, but I think it's worth it. It has 6.1 hrs of battery life, so that should be enough.

IBM ThinkPad T23. IBM was selling new ones on eBay for $999 last year, though I don't know if there are any left. You can probably get one from an IBM reseller, complete with a 3-year warranty.

It's not a Centrino (uses Pentium III-M), and it'll get perhaps 3-3.5 hrs of battery life, but it's a very sturdy machine with a proven track record.

Had you considered the lower end of the T40 series. Although they cannot compare to the higher end that is to say T40p, T41p) they are still just as good. And I must say, drastically cheaper. Other than my opinion and others, you have to research and decide for yourself.
