Best laptop ~$800 or less?

You have two different form factors listed there: 14.1" and 15.4" widescreens. The 15.4's are noticeably larger and bulkier - you need to figure out what type of laptop you need first.

That said, I'm a ThinkPad fan, as most here know. For $787 you can get a ThinkPad R61 with:

Processor: Intel® Pentium® Dual Core processor T2310 1
Operating system: Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium 1
Operating system language: Genuine Windows Vista Home Premium US English 1
Display type: 14.1 WXGA TFT 1
System graphics: Intel GMA X3100 GM965 w/ 1394 1
Total memory: 1 GB PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM 667MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM) 1
Keyboard: Keyboard US English 1
Pointing Device: UltraNav (TrackPoint and TouchPad) with Fingerprint Reader 1
Hard Drive: 80GB Hard Disk Drive, 5400rpm 1
Optical device: CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo 24X/24X/24X/8X Max, Ultrabay Enhanced 1
Wireless cards: ThinkPad 11a/b/g Wi-Fi wireless LAN Mini-PCIe US/EMEA/LA/ANZ 1
Battery: 7 cell Li-Ion Battery

You can upgrade numerous things rather cheaply: Vista Business, larger HDD, etc. The 15.4" versions should be of comparable price if you feel that is better for you.

Toshiba looks good and far better than Gateway notebook. (Acer bought Gateway this year).
