Hi,

I am posting for demonred here, cause I suggested he post but so far he din and he is researching which might be the best cooling pad for his gaming lappy.

Any feedback from those here who are discerning and with experience in this will be much appreciated....and, if people offering opinions could include specifics leading to a given recommendation, that would be fabulous.

Thanks!

Hey, although I really appreciate it, you did not have to post this for me. I am capable of doing my own research.

O deah:|.....in no way did I mean to diss you, and I totally respect you are delving! In fact, I am relieved and thrilled. I was just trying to help, since, while I ALWAYS make my own decisions, and insist everyone else does as well, and I am also an uber delver, I also sometimes solicit feedback, cause I find I often learn things, get new things to consider.... and it grows options.

And this, I think, is also an important topic we can ALL learn from sharing data on within this esoteric collective.:)

It wasn't a diss, I just feel bad about making you do so much work on my part. You already helped me out a lot when I posted my initial topic about my computer overheating.

Now, that clarification was HUGE! Thank U!

BUT, for anyone moved to help for the right reasons (empathy: you "become" The Other), THE GIVING really is the getting!

Plus you deserve it!

And, fab ripple effect: we ALL get to LEARN, cause this....is a community!!!!!

mostly depends on where the intake vents are located on the laptop. find a cooler with fans that line up.

Very good point. There are also many other factors bearing on the problem of notebook heat. Location, and placement, ambient conditions, and usage. One does what works for one's self. There are no one size fits all so9lutions.

Since 1994 I have had 7 notebooks, different brands. IMHO, a well designed and built notebook has little need of an external cooler. The common name for such machines invites heat problems, i.e., using it on one's lap. Unless it is on a hard surface, there is risk of compromising the cooling system.

Yep.....as I said right off in the big thread which inspired this spin off thread...fan placement is obviously key. Tho some of the new ones, I have now learned, have one, giant, gargantuan fan, and with those, fan placement moot..

But I must disagree re the need for cooling pads, esp re a GAMING lappy with a very demanding GPU. The newer the lappy, the thinner. More technology jammed into increasingly smaller space. Of course, some have better thermal engineering than others.

It never hurts to lower temps in any system....it always helps.

Again, esp lappys. Goal is HAPPY LAPPY.

Edit: Corky, again, we are addressing a gaming lappy here (tho my lappy is no way gaming lappy and I never regretted getting my Bytecc pad for it, I monitored the thermals, and it made a real difference).

I just got the link I posted in the main thread re an impressive one I found and am pasting it herein. Pls read the reviews. The stunning difference a good cooling pad can make!

But, as is so often the case, heat issues are often individual computer specific!!!!

The best laptop cooler is getting it off the table and suspending it . I use an ergo laptop stand that clamps to my desk. It articulates and all of that jazz. I had purchased one of those alumn nzxt laptop coolers for 17" 6 years ago and it didn't really work they well . The laptop is now suspended up off the desk about 9" and it's running cooler than it ever had been.

The problem I have with my laptop is while it doesn't throttle the bottom is uncomfortable warm. I personally don't need something to remove heat from the laptop just something to isolate the heat from my legs. What I didn't understand from that GCN review is whether the HeatShift once it reaches saturation still has a lower temperature on the left side or not. Infact none of these reviews really measure the thing we all basically need to know, which is how much does it decrease the temperature on our lap, how long does it last for and what happens after it warms up, what is the equilibrium. This seems to me to be a prime area for a proper review site to look into and take proper measurements using an IR gun.

First, despite the name laptop....nobody should be using one on their laps.

Next, is what U R sayin....you monitor yr temps and they are good? So u feel your only issue is with the lappy burning yr legs?

Yep......fostering normal, ambient airflow under a lappy helps. Well engineered coolers factor that in.

Only now learning about the passively cooled ones, all manner of different engineering. SO interesting. Here is new one I just came upon:

http://www.xpad4laptop.com/?gclid=COSLrOipgbwCFU8OOgodACUAFQ

Had I known about some of these passively cooled ones when i was delving to get mine, I think I would have chosen one of those. But, my fan cooled Bytecc..... made a real difference.

Fact is, with the right one, U do get SIGNIFICANT, consistent temp drops. And what prolongs the life of a computer more than that?

K.....not pouring Pesto Sauce into it, that is true.():)
