I think the ultimate goal for most knowledgeable programmers is career path towards software design and system architecture. Both will get you there, but by different means.

Depends on if you want money or happiness. Most software engineers will be at design 5-7 years from start. To go beyond that, you have to start acting as an interface to the customer, etc. More management and less involvement with the design of the software and architecture.
