Basic question: What is the best KVM for high resolution Video?????
Looking for a KVM for my win98 PC, Linux box, and to occasionaly hook my laptop to.
Any input would be appreciated!
I thought this purchase would be a no-brainer until I started looking into the issue.
Main issues with KVMs seem to be:
1. Degradation of video at high resolutions
2. Loss of mice when switching, or booting.
3. Loss of mouse functionality: wheel and extra buttons not supported
4. Incompatibility with non microsoft mice
5. Lack of inclusion of cables adding up to $50 per device attached to overal cost.
2/3/4 can simply be taken care of by using multiple mice. Not ideal but it sure is easier to switch mice than it is to switch keyboards or monitors!
It seems that ATEN and it's ressellers (linksys/iogear/startech?) do the best job of addressing issue 1/5
Many of the ATENs (even the 4 port) include cables. Pricegrabber list the best price as $18 for the belkin cables so that's $76 savings right there.
The ATEN and it's derivitaves claim "220 MHz VGA bandwidth allows resolutions up to 1920x1440 @ 60 Hz refreshs"
Problem is, the vendor is unknown to me and the design of the boxes is horible, with cables springing from 3 sides.
