Hey guys,

Im bored. My GF got me a $50 gift certificate to linens 'n things.

Which ones would you get.

Linens 'n Things Cutlery sets

The one for $20 with the spoons and everything looks like a good deal but it may fall apart. Keep in mine i need silverware too. Im happy spending $50 on a knife set but only if its worth it.

Do you cook alot?

If not, just buy a nice set from Target and use your GC for a set of nice sheets.

No I more meant interesting choice for your gf to get you :p

If you need a lot of crap, buy what you need. I got lucky and my parents had a sh!t load of their first house stuff left over that they saved for me. Knife sets, dishes, you name it

You won't get decent knives for $50. You might be able to get one knife.

I have this set:

http://www.lnt.com/product/index.jsp?pr...esort=priceAscending&parentPage=family

It's OK, the blades are stamped, not forged, but they are full tang at least. It's a good combination of knives (no useless steak knives). I did buy a couple small paring knives since the paring knife included in that set is a little long for hand-peeling fruit.

Avoid Henklels International and Everedge lines. Wustof makes nice knives, but avoid the Emeril line (they're stamped and most aren't full-tang).

If I could only have one knife for under $100 (and maybe a cheap paring knife), I'd get a Santoku. The J.A. Henckels Twin Cuisine 7" Santoku Knife looks nice, but it's $90.

Edit: Oh, you don't cook. In that case, get this:

http://www.lnt.com/product/index.jsp?pr...esort=priceAscending&parentPage=family

And a paring knife.

With that budget and the steak knives requirement, you are pretty much limited to mass produced "made in China" serrated garbage. You would seriously be better off spending the $50 on one good Chefs or Sankotu knife and buy a cheap set of steak knives for $15, IMO.

That $20 one you listed is probably fine, you may want to handle it to see how heavy the knives are to get some idea of their longevity. You really shouldn't expect super high quality for $20, but that set should be passable for someone who only occasionally cooks. Plus the crock with the spatulas, wisk, etc is all stuff you'd need anyway. The knives appear to be full tang, which is a plus.

I debate the usefulness of steak knives, but I hardly ever cook steak for other people, so it's not a big deal for me to cut up my steak with my chef's knife before I plate it. I guess they'd be handy if you were going to have people over and cook steaks for them. I'm in grad school and can't afford to feed my friends decent steaks every time they come over :)

Let's just say it's right up there with Pier One Imports on the you-know-what scale.

If you're only going to spend fifty bucks on a knife set, just do yourself a favor and get the cheapest one possible.

i got a 7" henckels professional S and 4" henckels paring knife set for around $100 or 110 shipped. after one use i threw out all the other cheap knives i had. its expensive, but its worth it if you do any cutting and cooking.

I was lucky a friend of mine worked at cutco for a while and gave me a free set of knives, the biggest set they had with block. Great knives. Not worth what he said they charge, but a great set of knives.

Agreed. The difference in quality for a $20 knife set vs. a $50 one is going to be really minimal. You can't buy a "quality" set for anything close to that. So go cheap and use the other $30 to buy something else you could use.

Use a good knife once and you'll never use made in china garbage again. Plus, you will never be able to get a good edge on a cheap knife nor will it stay sharp. You get what you pay for.
