i loved Walter Savitch's Java: An Introduction to Computer Science and Programming... but ona few trips to my local bookstore i've really taken notice of Harvey M. Deitel Paul J. Deitel's Java How to Program

which do you people think is a better book?

Or use the online (downloadable) java tutorial from Sun!

Bruce Eckelalso has a "Thinking in Java" book, if it is like the his "Thinking in C++" it should be good enough.

I hated Deitels' C++ How to Program, so I can't imagine their Java book being much better.

Bruce Eckel's Thinking in Java is pretty good.

I like Deitel's books becaue they give a lot of examples. I am currently taking a JAVA class right now and we have some official book from Sun and it's nice because it tells you where to find stuff in the API but sometimes I need more examples. I borrowed my friend's Deitel book and it's been a big help.
