There are so many different models! any recommendations? I really want one w/ wifi, and if it can do the horiz and vertical orientation that would be awesome.

sorry this post is kinda disjointed... i'm typing from class

I was never an Apple fanboy, quite the contrary. But the Touch is really good and my first Apple product ever. Why avoid it?

Yeah, that's what I was wondering too.

There's some cheap knock-offs, but I'm not sure how good they are. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UGS2SG?ie=UTF8

I guess for $49, you get what you pay for. The reviewers don't seem very impressed. There are more like these if you look around - particularly if you are willing to order from China. Having done a bit of this in the past, however, if you don't want to be disappointed, then don't expect to be very impressed with what you get. None of them that I saw in my quick search had WiFi though.

The Nokia N800 was going for super-cheap about 10 months ago - I remember Amazon had them for well under $200. They are still around $200 (on a good day) on Ebay.

The Archos 605 WiFi 4GB models are around $200. They are bigger than a Touch though - but have a nicer screen. I don't think you can browse the web on them though, and the application support has got to be a lot less than Apple's AppStore.

Normally I would agree with you, especially Apple computers. However, when my daughter bought her original Ipod nano (1st gen) for $200, my Samsung YP-Z5 was pretty close to the same product for the same price and the same memory. So the $$$ argument is less valid with MP3 players. Apple and other brand competition are pretty close when it comes to features, memory and price. However, my daughters Ipod Nano costing the same and with the same memory was much more responsive and easier to use. The Samsung takes forever to start up and about the only plus is it had a color screen that was bigger vs the original Nano. But the Nano popped right on and went to work.

Sooooo.... I'd say the Touch isn't highly expensive next to the competition either.

I was anti-apple until about a year ago when I finally bought my first ipod. AFter 3 or 4 previous mp3 players, I was blown away with the ipod.

If you go to apple's site, then go to the store, down on the lower left hand side there are refurbished ipod for sale. You can now get refurb itouches pretty cheap, although they are the last generation model.

I have the current gen itouch and I have to admit I'm now an ipod fan.

Great suggestion - an 8GB Touch for $180 is a great deal, even if it is refurb.
