I like to listen to music, and sometimes watch videos, via youtube on my iphone over 3G (usually not wifi).
I was using "TubePlayer" app. The 3G stores was usually not acceptable, but it did have a "cache" feature which allowed me to download easily and listen anytime later.
Over the last few months they've ruined the app for me by locking out my previously downloaded videos, and purposely misleading popup ads or intrusive loud ad videos.
I was going to buy it, but all the marketing psychology games have turned me off enough to seek other options, paid or unpaid, jailbroke or normal.
Side, but related, issue is about how bad youtube has become, particularly on mobile. Most videos I used to listen to now have a "user removed or private" error, which sounds like $ lie.

Is there no way these days to just to stream particular songs or albums anymore?
Is the only way to buy everything first through iTune$?

Do you have Spotify or a similar music service in Japan? Most music streaming for a really small monthly fee (subscription). You can also download all the songs you like for offline listening (needs once-a-month refresh of account credentials to confirm you're still paying the subscription).

The issue is, I think, that downloading and caching videos may be barred by the YouTube TOS now. So you may not find an app that even does that now.

I would imagine that iTunes would have the most available licensing world-wide, since Apple's been doing it so long. I know they have an iTunes Store in Japan.

You may look in to Sony's Music Unlimited service. It's available in Japan and has an iOS app.

Ya iTunes is readily available here.
I checked Sony and the iphone app has really bad reviews. The service is 15-20$ a month. I miss youtube from a few years back.

For radio, tunein app works great.
Always annoys me when I see useful working things nerfed, ruined, or destroyed to make the rich richer.
