I went ahead and ordered the RebelTouch Arctic from SwitchEasy:

I don't know, it had good reviews and it looks decent enough. We'll see.

I've tried Speck Candyshell, Agent 18 Eco, and Incase Slider. I'm on my 4th case (in about 3 years of iPhones).

I like my Incase Protective Cover because it's sticky (doesn't slide on my dashboard), easy to put on and take off, it's spongy and offers some shock protection and it was $25 when I bought it.

I don't have the phone, just the pod and I don't really care how thin it is if it's going to be lying cracked on the ground. :D

I've dropped the iPhone a few times and nothing has ever happened to it. I don't know what you think a 1.5mm "shell" is going to do if you drop it hard enough to break the phone. It won't do anything. I guess if you don't take care of your equipment or you are prone to "butter fingers" then by all means, put it in a Pelican Case.

Actually, the Switcheasy Rebel is a great case for protection. Check out some of the YouTube Videos out there of people dropping their iPhones in a Switcheasy Rebel from 7 feet in the air onto concrete.

incipio feather. got mine for $9.99, and its EXTREMELY thin, but very durable. it overs the back, and leaves a little bit of the chrome on top exposed, as well as leaving the hardware buttons and headphone port uncovered. its the best case ive used hands down. i wouldnt even consider going to another case for an iphone.

Yeah, those are what sold me on it. I have this nasty habit of pulling my electronics out of my pocket as I walk, then I stumble and they shoot out of my hand onto the ground a few feet in front of me. If this case can protect it from that, which it appears it can, I will be a happy camper.

Yep. That has happened to me a couple of times too.

My list of iPhone accidents.
I was running through Denver Airport at full tilt for a flight that I really didn't want to miss and my 2G iPhone in it's Agent18 case flew out of my jacket pocket, slid literally 30 feet across the airport tile and had no damage at all.

I was laying tile in the bathroom and had my 2G iPhone fall about 5ft. off the top of a step-ladder onto tile. It wasn't in a case. The corner of the phone dented slightly but no other damage.

I was listening to music while working in the garage and had my 2G iPhone perched on a cabinet about 7 ft. above a concrete floor and I bumped the cabinet while moving a ladder and it fell about 7ft. while in an Incase Slider case. The stereo jack was bent so that it wasn't circular and some headphones had problems with it but it still worked with Apple headphones.

I got out of my car and fumble-fingered my iPhone in a Slider case and did this juggling routine while I fumbled the phone madly trying to keep it from landing on the ground. I caught it but I decided I wanted a case that wasn't so slippery.

I bought an iPhone 3G used and carried it around Europe in a Speck case. The case was some funky girly color (pink and grey, I think), sold that pretty fast. Aside from the color, I really liked the Speck case, but I think they are a bit expensive for what they are.

And now I have my iPhone 3GS in an Incase Protective Case and I'm happy. Works well, no more juggling, no more sliding if it's on my dashboard.

I cracked the incase slider at the bottom. Also the little plastic thin part that encompasses the charge port broke off within a month or so. Happened with my friend's iPhone 2G case as well. Seems to be a problem. The new cases seem better. They're more flexy at least on the 3GS and my gf's iPod Touch 2G.

pm: is the protective case diff from the slider case? Is that the silicone one or soft product rather than a hard plastic shell?

Lol, wow, quite the war stories there! :D Glad to see it seems you have finally sorted things out.

I actually do like the design of the one I picked. I generally like things to be minimalist and while this is a bit garish, it's not too bad. I hope it retains that once I see it in person.

The protective case isn't silicone but it has a similar in terms of stickiness but the material is much firmer than silicone. It's more like a sticky hardened rubber.

At the time that I bought it, it was one of the cheapest cases in the Apple store, and I really liked the feel of it. But it seems to have gone up in price a bit. http://www.goincase.com/products/detail/protective-cover-cl59038

I have the SwitchEasy Capsule Rebel. Best case I ever owned. it's super strong and I love the design.

I second this in every way, best case I have ever owned.
I have a clear one for my white 3GS and it looks awesome, the backbone looks like a transparent chrome and the protection is excellent without major bulk up and you can buy the spines seperate and interchange colors.

It comes with extras like 2 screen protectors, video stand, earphone adapter and dock insert, very cool..

Best $25 I ever spent.

I have the Switch Easy Rebel Serpent and it comes with 2 screen shields, video stand, dock adapter and the 3rd pin Protector. I have one more from iFanatic it’s called Gamefacez iphone case made from silicone. This case provides maximum protection and secure grip. It's a fine case if you’re looking for basic protection from the little bumps and falls.

Otterbox.
I have the Defender. No war stories about dropping it (yet), but guy at Apple store said "I didn't believe the stories either, so I took it out in the parking lot and dropped it. Here; take my phone and try it." Guys working on my roof had stories about drops from ladders onto concrete with no damage.
Plastic shell with rubber/silicone/whatever wrapper. I put a Zagg Invisible Shield over the screen; love it.
