I think the usual suspects that people will list are Miranda, GAIM, and regular AIM with the ad remover, possibly in that order of preference. I use Trillian, but I don't really have any strong feelings about any of them.

Trillian Pro 3.1 and Gaim (for my laptop) no major complain except for Gaim (too slow to load and the user interface is too confusing for me)

Care to explain why you think that? I don't have a problem with Trillian, but I wouldn't mind trying something new.

Uses less resources, infinitely more customizable, there's a ton of plugins for just about every feature you'd want. On the other hand, if what you want is absolute minimal, you have that option. I think it's a great program.

Well these are the ones I use. I tend to go toward the more simplistic side of customization for Miranda.

History++: Better options for saved chat history.
PopUp or PopUp Plus: Provides popup support for other plugins that show you notifications in little popup windows and such. Quite configurable.
Last Seen Plugin: Adds last seen information to the right-click context menu for a contact (customizable, you can display date and time in several formats).
WhoIsReadingMyStatusMsgNotify: Uses the popup plugin to popup a little box when someone reads your occupied/away/etc. message.

Adium understads AIM / iChat, ICQ understands AIM, Miranda just won't understand AIM - the part of the official package or the oscar plugin - no matter which version I use. 'An error occurred while attempting to connect.' , what, really?

But otherwise I like Miranda :) (For MSN and ICQ)

Used to use an older version of AIM with DeadAim, but that started giving me random error messages (like "Not Enough Memory"). At that point, I switched to Gaim and have not looked back. I did try out Trillian for about 3 months last year, but it was confusing to set up and annoying with the inability to follow links in AIM profiles.

Hmmm. Try getting the newest version of Miranda (one was just released not too long ago). I use AIM and ICQ on it and both work fine.

I use GAIM.
Tried Trillian, but the interface drove me borderline insane after 5 minutes or so.
I like GAIM because it's plain and simple, not truckloads of flash and junk everywhere, just boring but functional.

The downside to GAIM is that it doesn't handle client to client connections for sending files over MSN, which makes that pretty damn slow.

ditto.

The only downside is the poor file sending support, but honest, for the very rare time that a friend wants to send me a picture via direct connect, I just don't care.
