My Athlon XP Mobo is dead and it's time to upgrade! I am getting an Athlon 64 3000+ chip and I am trying to decide on the best motherboard to pair with it. I don't need RAID or firewire options so I was looking at the Chaintech VNF-3 board. I have seen a MSI K8N Neo (non-Platinum) board for $35 more and a few other options as well.

So, what is the best Athlon 64 board with an nForce chipset for around $100??

If you're not going to overclock very much, I can vouch for the Soltek SL-K8AN2E-GR. It's rock-solid and very high quality. It's the 250GB version, so for $99 shipped it's a great deal. The only drawback to the Soltek is max Vcore is 1.55V and max VDIMM is only "decent" at 2.8V.

Under $100 the choices are simple - Soltek SL-K8AN2E-GR $100 shipped or ASRock "K8S8X" for $78 at newegg.

I"m also building a new comp with amd 3200+. I was thinking of buying the Abit KV8 Pro for about $90. Anybody have anything to say about this board? Based on the specs and some reviews i've read, it's really good.

I have built 4 systems around the VNF3-250 motherboard. All have worked fine so far. Oldest is about 3 months. Very fast, very cheap, makes me very happy.

Really cheap then go with the Chaintech nForce3 250

If you want less then $100 but more/better options then Chaintech, then get the Epox nForce3 250gb board

Id recommend either the Abit KV8 Pro, or the Soltek K8AN2E-GR (for low cost solutions)

I bought the Soltek.. it's not like I didn't want to spend good money on a quality motherboad, but quite simply, you get a kickass motherboard for low cost with the Soltek, so it really just works out. I've spent $200+ Cdn on mobos before that run no differently than this one (maybe have an added feature or 2) but the Soltek is awesome for what you pay. even has 4 SATA ports.

I'm running two VNF3-250's and both have been flawless low cost motherboards. I totally recommend them. I bought my last one from zipzoomfly for $72 and and the other for $80 from Newegg. They are fast, stable, overclock very well and although low on frills and extra's, offer SATA, Raid, great onboard sound and a good overclocking options.

Some find me a board with

Native S-ATA x4
Native GbE

Of course, the layout has to be decent to fit in a V-1200 :)
Now, find it around $100... :)
