Best Imaging software?

I just installed a 300gb hd and have a 120gb backup. I just freshly installed apps, programs and an os on the 300gb. Whats the easiest software to use to backup or image. I just need to store the imae on a dvd and the 300 gb in case i want to reimage my machinein the future.

Ive seen Norton Ghost 2005, Norton Ghost 9 (dont knoeww difference between 9 and 2005) and Acronis TrueImage. In all seriousness will they all do the same thing.

Generally, yes, they all do the same thing. I've used Ghost for the past several years to do what you are describing. However, I gave Acronis True Image v8 a try, and haven't used Ghost since.

There was a thread here recently where people said that they had lots of problems with Ghost 9.

Acronis True Image. I've been 100% satisfied with version six. The Ghost problems go back to four years ago, when XP was launched. Acronis will image anything!

Well, are you going to be using it on a network or a stand-alone?

I can't see spending the, (typically) more money for the network version, if you're not going to be administrating it on a network.

FYI: Drive imaging does NOT equal Backing Up... A one byte error can cause the loss of either the whole image file or the part of it beyond the error. File-by-file is the REAL backup. But if you want to do a drive image, Acronis is about as good as it gets.

Acronis True Imge. Does it have an 'image' size? I want to image my C drive of 17Gb and put it on another drive (new Seagate to quieten down on the WD SE drives ).

Will it do the trick? And what if the Seagate is on SATA? Will that cause any problems?

Most drive imaging software will allow you to choose between compressed and uncompressed. The image file size will vary depending on the degree of compression you choose and the compressability of your data.

True Image should work fine, as these imaging programs like TI and Ghost simply do a bit-to-bit copy from the old drive to the new drive. However, I've heard that the imaging programs and SATA drives don't always play nice.
