Trying to keep it under $650. Seems if I go with Intel based they only come with some version of Intel HD IGP. AMD has the HD4250 or 5470. Which offers the best performance for video playback (1080p mkvs, flash based videos, and netflix hd streaming)?

Probably the Nvidia 9400/ION (pretty much the same chip) I'm an AMD guy, but even I'll admit that Nvidia has done a better job with pushing GPU media acceleration.

Now that being said, you'll NEVER manage to get all videos to use GPU acceleration, so you might want to consider having enough CPU power to run videos on CPU allone when nececary.

This.

Likely any of the latest dual cores (Turion II, Core i3 and up) won't have any problems. Heck, I was playing 720p stuff fine on my Pentium SU4100 (Core 2 based with less cache, 1.3GHz dual core).

amd/ati stuff should be ok. my motherboard in my tower has an integrated 3300 (or 3200? whatever) for HD playback and it doesnt hiccup a bit when playing a blu ray or hd ripped vids

this is keeping me on the fence about my next laptop...intel models get better battery life, but still have the shitty intel video

First first laptop, a 1.83GHz Core Duo with GMA 950 played back 720p MKVs with no issue. When I first got it (2006) Netflix streaming and YouTube also were fine. But as more and more stuff on YouTube and Netflix and Hulu went higher res... the 950 couldn't keep up.

I would imagine that the intel integrated would be fine for video playback, but almost certainly not gaming.

im not at all concerned about gaming, i have a desktop and ps3 for that...i just want to be able to kill time with a video now and again
