actually that is a great idea! that way you don't have to open the fridge to see what you have!
And it is so simple to do! i think i will try that! :D

Yah it seems like a blindingly simple idea. I've been researching a lot of Smart House stuff recently and have been trying to figure out a good food inventory system...this is perfect! Passive, zero-maintenance system with instant access to your fridge/freezer's contents! Every few months I end up doing a complete de-junking of the fridge/freezer and storage freezer...this little trick will make that happen much less :D

you could also do it even easier with printed computer magnets with the words of the food that is in each part.
The only issue is if you have a stainless steel fridge, they would not stick. :(

That is what we have and it would not work. :(

Ooh nifty, does it actually work? I always have to use 2 pads so that I don't burn my fingers.

They have fridges with see through doors now too. But the inside of our fridge is messy so I wouldn't want one. They also have some with a small door in the middle of the main door so you can just get out some juice or something without having to oepn the whole door and let all the cold air out.

That is not that great of a product to be honest with you.
If it gets wet from steam or anything, the heat goes through it and burns you.
we have a silicone oven mitt that is great though!

Magnets don't stick to our fridge. When we had one that magnets did stick to, the wife had the whole damned thing plastered with (mostly) other people's kids. Every time I'd open the door, something would fall off. Hated those flippin magnets.

We don't steam stuff in our oven, which is all we basically use them for. We use the run of the mill potholders for stovetop work.

I think a scanning system that scans each food item you purchase and each food item you use and stores them in a database. That way you can press print when leaving the house and it will have a printout of what is out and what is in, like a small kitchen inventory.
A similiar thing for DVDs and Music CDs would be cool.

Kaido posting something for a home that doesn't involve technology?

This is what it should of been:

When you put an item in the fridge, it scans the bar code and displays it on an LCD screen on the front of your fridge/freezer. When it's gone, you throw it out... the bar code would no longer be in the freezer, therefore it would no longer read out on the LCD...

or something like that :p

The nice thing about those gloves is that you can leave it on and actually make use of your hand unlike with a clunky oven mit. I used something like that at a restaurant I used to work for, but it's not really ideal for home cooking IMO.

We're sharing a place right now. 6 people, a fridge/freezer, and a large storage freezer. If you're single or maybe have an SO or roommate, you might not need to do this.

Too much work cutting and taping, etc for me.
And as for oven mitts, I like the silicone jobbies...nothing better than something you can sheathe your hand in and safely immerse it in boiling oil! :D

I'm coming to your house and poking a hole in your glove with a pin. We'll see how long dipping your hand in boiling oil lasts :p
