One other factor to consider: what OS are you using? I agree that Toshiba and Teac make excellent drives. Not many of their models are Win2K-compatible though.
In my experience Asus is the best -- good audio ripping and quick windup and eject times. I have used Toshiba and Teac as well, and they are both good. I guess it depends on your needs. If its simply reading CDs then any one would be a good choice. Just stay away from Lite-On and Afreey (sp?) drives -- they are noisy as hell!
I bought a 56x Majic spin at Office max, it was on sale for 39.00, it listed at 70.00 and it's so fricken fast, quiet and reliable.
I wouldn't have paid 70.00 though.
One good thing is that it reads Packet writting, which is beneficial in my case as I store files on this kind of disk such as video drivers and such. I just add them as needed, so I don't have to burn a disk every time.
Thanks for all your responses. Just ordered a Toshiba 48X CD-ROM drive (XM-6702B) from Nxgen.com. Had a really hard time finding the Toshiba drive. Most online resellers have stopped selling it for some reason. I guess Toshiba must have discontinued its 48x drive.
