Agreed. Notepad does suck; there's much better html editors available. Go with Dreamweaver if you need a wysiwyg editor; I think it's the best out there.

Hey Czar, are you using the free version of PHPed or the NuSphere version? I've been checking out the NuSphere version and I like it alot. Installed with the Technology Platform with Apache, MySQL and PHP it's pretty sweet and they've done a nice job of itegrating it. The price is steep though.
I'm just using the old alpha version.. which is still extremely good :)

Can I get the Nusphere version for free or is it pay only?

Wait till you have 7,000 files, and you want to search for any instance of <a href="mylink.html">[ANY TEXT HERE]</a> and replace ANY TEXT with "this file is my file" across all 7,000 files. Have fun with notepad!

thats MS also gave us WordPad

I third Homesite, although 4.5.2 was better than 5.0. Macromedia removed the WYSIWYG editor that was just basic enough for most tasks that you would want a WYSIWYG editor for.

Dreamweaver MX has got to be the nicest out there. It's basically Dreamweaver 4 merged with Homesite 4.5, but only with more features and support.

don't knock it till you try it. and please, nobody mention Frontpage. gotta be the worst editor out there.

(and yes, I used to use notepad all the time, but I prefer to be more efficient with my time)

Sigh.. don't get me started on that "real men use notepad" mumbo.. crap.

If you guys ever develop larger sites (if you have to, that is), you'd know being a real man has nothing to do with anything. It has nothing to do with your ability to code HTML by hand.

Homesite+ / CF Studio 5 is the best non-WYSIWYG editor (and it can do WYSIWYG also) hands down. It allows you to edit files directly on an FTP, remote development services if you modi code on another server, etc. etc. Want to see database tables / datasources? It can do it too. Global search and replace? No problem. It's not as simple as being able to color-code your code (even though it helps a great deal when looking for errors). I think I'll stop now... some of you Notepad users are too ignorant to try anything else anyway.

Oh and if you're worried about cost... 1st Page 2000 is similar to what I mention for the best price - $0. Good call Amish.

Notepad? What kind of sites can you manage efficiently with Notepad?

The new Studio MX/Coldfusion MX is great. If you attend a university you should be able to buy it for less than $200 which is a deal. You get

Dreamweaver MX
Flash MX
Fireworks MX
Freehand
Coldfusion Developer

Good stuff.

I think most REAL web developers/designers code by hand becuase they code in some sort of scripting language....PHP, Perl, CGI, JSP. etc...etc...

However if I were to "design" a page, I wouldn't waste my time using notepad as it is extremely inefficient.

I want to know right then and there how my page might be rendered in a browser. Imagine how much time you waste coding, saving and going back and forth just to make tiny little changes to your design

You can download the 14 day trial version; it has complete functionality. Be sure to download the Technology Platform and install that first because then when you do the install of PHPed it will integrate seemlessly. Doesn't matter if you have PHP already installed; it will install install another version into the PHPed directory and use that so if you don't like it you can always uninstall and it won't mess up your original version of PHP. All in all, I'm pretty impressed and I've been using it extensively for a client's project for the past week. Works very well for me; I may have to buy it.

I would LOVE to see you guys code something in notepad that would be exactly the same as an advanced page with DHTML and XHTML in Dreamweaver :p

I'm sure it's possible, it would just take 123123x10^23432 times longer to do it.

Exactly. Which is why Dreamweaver's better than notepad :)

I currently use Homesite 4.5 @ work and Dreamweaver MX (Homesite+) @ home. I've used all the majors out there and the only other editor i'd use instead of Macromedia products is Visual Studio.NET.... VS.NET has a really nice interface although its far more than just an HTML/Script editor... so it usually isn't worth it to use it... unless of course your doing some ASP.NET action.

Also, I second everyone's reaction to people saying that Notepad is for "real" men... yea for those real men that haven't ever designed a "real" site w/ real time constraints, yea maybe its for them.
