Best HT Subwoofer for under $300?

Well I did a little bit of shopping today for a decent subwoofer and I'd like some recommendations for subs. I know I've asked this before but I didn't give a price range and the responses from that thread were well out of my range. Brands I'm currently looking at are Klipsch, JL Audio, and Infinity. I'm looking for a sub with a good strong punch to it. If you could also point out a good store online where it can be purchased at a decent price that'd be appreciated.

To be quite honest I really don't need as much power as SVS subwoofers provide. That and it's not so much how much I have to spend (using a CC) but how much I'm willing to spend. And I'm not willing to spend more on the subwoofer than I did on my receiver.
 
heh i need to be a HT subwoofer myself.

dont want a expensive one. but would be nice to get one.

hopeing to either find one on sale or get one at an auction
 
I bought one of these for $110 from a department store in the fall. It's a nice sub for the $$.

It's not an SVS but it's well constructed and will rattle your teeth pretty good. Not really "boomy" sounding like many of the cheaper subs.
 
The AudioSource SW-15 is a killer cheap sub. I bought it and made some minor mods (adding baffling materials to the interior), per the reviews on Amazon and audioreview.com, and it is an earth-shaking sub for less than $175. It will tide me over nicely until I feel like springing for an SVS. Beware that it is gigantic - fortunately I got free shipping from Amazon.com.
 
Sorry, no DIY I don't have all the tools & skill necessary. I might look around for the Audiosource SW-15 though. Keep the suggestions coming 🙂
 
Save up another few bucks and get a HSU STF-2. It was $314.96 today from CompUSA (if in stock near you), but today is almost over.

Btw has anybody heard of a brand called Definitive Technology? It's one of the sub brands that was available at my local Soundtrack. Sounded fairly decent although the area they have it in is different than what any sub I'll purchase will be in.

Yeah, not great performance for the price, IMHO. Honestly, your best bet at $300 for a NON-DIY is probably a used SVS.
 
O.K., one other quick idea for you. Pick up a 12" Shiva driver and a 250-watt plate amp. Hire a local car audio shop to make a cabinet out of MDF for home theater/music use. Provide the shop with the cut-out information for the driver and plate amp. You can then go forward with the installation of the components. This would cost about $350 total, but would put anything in the $300 - $600 range to shame.

Do you have a jigsaw? A Sonosub is relatively easy to build. An Adire Audio Tempest driver is only $150 + shipping.

Acoustic Visions offers alot of good kits, and some come pre cut unassembled. Thus, its DIY with pre made parts (Think Lego 😀 ) which is VERY nice for those who wish to save a few bucks but cant make the peices themselves.

Kit examples

I'd call Acoustic Visions, explain your problem and see what they can do for you. A Adire Shiva or Stryke Audio would be two good sub options on a budget. But I think your best bet is to just give'm a call and explain your situation. They could offer you a pre cut unassembled kit, where you just glue, screw and mount the electronics.
