I am going to buy this cpu soon, but would like some input on which hsf to buy. I was considering the volcano 7 @newegg for $27

if you would've posted this in the cases and cooling forum they would've told you the Thermalright SK-6 with YS-Tech fan or the Alpha 8045

If you don't plan on overclocking, go with the Volcano6Cu (With some generic thermal compound for $1), or the retail boxed 1.4. Whichever is cheaper. If you plan on overclocking, get the Thermalright SK6 and a 60x60x25mm Delta fan. Or, if that is too noisy for you, the Thermaltake 60x60x25mm fan, it's under case fans or something like that.

You may want to reconsider the volcano7. From Hard|OCP:

<< This is Thermaltake's newest and bestest cooler, and it comes with some new technology. They have included a temperature sensor on the fan unit. When the case temp gets up to 35°C/95°F, the fan kicks up from around 3,000 to 5,000 RPMs. While this sounds great in theory, it seems to be terrible in application for the enthusiasts. Of course, in our testing, we keep the temperature a constant, so we never got to the 95°F needed to kick the fan into high gear. So, I put it in my own case. It was ventilated enough that the fan still never spun up, so I put it in a Folding box that I have here which has a crappy PSU in it. Yes, it did finally spin up to the 5,000 RPMs. Sad thing is, it never spun down. . .

It looks as if Thermaltake is once again trying to sell you the gimmick instead of just selling you a solid product, much like we saw with their Dragon Orb series. Sorry, Thermaltake, you guys belong back in the "cheapie" category coolers, because your shot at the high-end market is not cutting it.

The new Swiftech MCX462 is also good, but very expensive.

The performance of the Alpha 8045 is somewhere in between the old Swiftech MCA462 and the new MCX462, but the difference between the three is very slight.

Save money with Alpha.

i have an sk-6 right now with a YS-Tech fan....man that's an airplane. and its only on a P3 733@800. keeps it well in the low 30's tho!

if you're not overclocking, then there's no need to get a high performance HSF. why would AMD provide a HSF for their chip that isn't sufficient?

but if you're overclocking, i'd suggest a cooler that uses the 4 mounting brackets on some Socket-A mobo's (e.g. the Alpha or the Swiftech, i believe) and accepts an 80mm fan, which could provide the same CFM as a 60mm fan but quieter (ex. a Panaflo fan).

or if you're crazy hardcore....water-cool that sucker!! and have it pass thru your video card while you're at it.
