Looking to purchase a P4 / 3.0CGHz and an Abit IC7-G MB.

Looking through this forum it seems a lot of you like the SLK-800, will this be the best for this combo ? If so can anyone recommend a better solution (air) ?

Also what fan will work with this HS or any you guys recommend ?

Thanks

Its a bitch to take on and off... but my proc is at 26C right now... so you do the math

What's your case temp like?

Is that 26C off the on-board sensor? Because I haven't seen anyone with an IC7 that low (temps report ~15C high on the IC7).

I run a Zalman 7000CuAl, very nice heatsink and it fits fine. Case temps 35C-40C, CPU 42C-50C (again, that's with the temp sensor bug).

26C sounds kinda low. I am getting a Spark 7 and an Antec HD cooling kit w/2 sensors and LED display. I am gona put one on my CPU and leave one floating. The review for the Spark 7 at Overclocker Cafe is pretty good.

26C is the idle probe temp from my hardcano 2. The probe itself is asfixed into the arm of the socket so that it touches the side surface of the core without interfering with the mounting. I have tested it against industrial calibration equipment and found it to be credible +/- .8C

However, one thing I neglected to mention is the winbond core temperature which is an almost constant 40c. Furthermore, its not like I'm running a powercrunching 3.0c proc anyway... I'm suffering along with a 2.0a (100mhz fsb unsupported my ass lol).

Take my recommendation with whatever grain of salt you wish, but I have seen countless benchmarks that say that this sink coupled with a delta is by far the best solution out. I dont care that much for the noise and my case is fully lit, so I just got the stylin TMD.

Good luck with your purchace decision.

That explains a lot... I was wondering about that.... 40 - 15 = 25... right? :D

Although the probe fluctuates up to 30c, winbond NEVER goes over 40C (-15=25)... certainly cool enough for me...

its a shame the proc is such a POS it wont overclock at all tho... gotta get a 2.4c asap

ok thanks for the replies fellas. I think I will go with acemcmac's suggestion.

Why is it such a bitch to install ace, its not just a simple four bolt operation ? Any pointers you have in that respect will be appreciated bro.

...and thanks for the info on bios temp problem with that board virtuamike.

the bolts of the sink dont sit flush in the holes on the board on any axis. the only way the sink stays stationary is by high tension put off by the springs. don't get me wront- its solid as a rock, it's just really really hard to get the sink on without smearing your thermal paste all over the place... I don't even know if I got it right... i would assume by my temps that i did, but i dunno...

one other little tip. use latex gloves unless you want to use an antioxidant to take your fingerprints off the pure copper base  :D
