Best HS/Fan for an AGP Geforce 6800GT?

My Geforce 6800GT AGP has been running idol at 62C and peaks out at 72C. I believe this is rather warm and may shorten its length. It is in an Antec Sonata and is getting good ventilation but im afraid that the stock cooling is rather poor, I considered the Artic Cooling NV Silencer, but I can?t find it in stock at SVC and Newegg (both places were sold out last i checked) are there any good alternatives to cool this thing? I would prefer air to be blown out the back of the case via 2nd slot like the Silencer does and i want it to be quieter than stock cooling (NVIDIA reference). I do not care how many slots it takes up.

Thanks

Zalman VF700 (AlCu or Cu), quieter and cools better than the Silencer. I've had both and I'd take the Zalman over the Silencer any day. If you have the front 120mm fan in your Sonata just take off the PCI backplate next to the video card and the heat will blow out through that opening.

Is that thing easy to install?

it's easy enough provided you have enough clearance.

excellent, Do i need anytype of cooling on the ram? Because if i remove the reference heatsink, then they will not have any cooling.

They give you RAMsinks with the heatsink.

Just ordered it, hope the 6800GT does not have that HSI or whatever that bridge chip is below the GPU like some do. I suppose to the VF700-CU does not cover that if it does?

Only the PCIe 6800s have the HSI chip. Even if it did, the chip is on the same package as the GPU so either heatsink should still work.

That is a relief, thank you. Picked up this also, it work pretty good at getting thermal grease off of the GPU when i put my Artic Silver 5 on it? Or would using AS5 be a bad idea on something like this?

It'll work, but a 79 cent bottle of alcohol from the drug store will work just as well. AS5 is fine to use on the GPU, just don't be sloppy with it.

I use 90% isopropyl alcohol (99% is hard to find at local stores) and q-tips for cleaning. Not very high tech, but it has cleaned up any thermal grease or AS5 I've ever had to get off.

I'd also like to second being careful with AS5 on your GPU. AS5 is slightly conductive and you could cause trouble if some ends up on the PCB in the wrong places. I've never had the problem myself, but I've talked to people who have. Just don't be sloppy and you?ll be fine.

I just recently got a nvsilencer as a present to install on my 6800GT.

does anyone know a good guide on how to change the HS safely? I have built up my pc from top to bottom but i'm not to confident with switching a HS.

also is AS3 ok? or should i try and purchase some AS5?

thanks for your help in advance

Schadenfroh, the nice Lifer. 😉

Anyway, MaKoMan, when you open the packaging on the silencer, you will find detailed instructions with pictures.

Generally the trickiest part is getting the plastic brads that hold the factory heatsink to release. Just be careful once you do get them to go as they are spring loaded and can shoot out pretty far if given the opportunity (experience! still can't find one of mine).

Since you've already put your own system together I won't go any further other than to say you should be just as careful with your GPU heat sink as you were putting on your CPU heat sink. It's basically the same with a couple of easy twists. Just read twice and install once. 🙂
