Best Home Network Setup and VPN For This

I have a laptop/tablet PC and it has a smaller hard drive. I have a quad core PC connected to 8 TB of external drives.

I networked this PC so I can access all these drives from nearly all my devices while I'm in my home.

Instead of upgrading the SSD on my laptop/tablet I wanted to use VPN to access apps on the quad core PC.

What is the best (in your opinion) free VPN for home networks? How about a paid version? I've tried LogMeIn and another web based one and they are horrible.

Can I get audio from the quad core PC to play through the vpn and on the laptop?

I draw a lot and want my graphic programs to be on the quad core, but do graphics remotely from the laptop. I have a wacom tablet also. Will that work through vpn?

I just do not want to fill up my wireless devices with a lot of software when I have all the HD space on the quad core desktop.

Maybe there is a better way to do all this and if so, please let me know.

Thank you

What is your router that you are using?
Routers such as ASUS modems have OpenVPN built in, that allow you to access the data remotely.

You want the actual applications to be on the desktop, or do you mean just the data?

What operating systems run on these devices?

You are mixing VPN and remote desktop/remote control (or application sharing, if you will). There are some remote access solutions that take care of the networking stuff for you, like Logmein and Teamviewer. Teamviewer can transmit audio, I don't know how well your drawing tablet will work, so give it a try. You should install the Teamviewer client on your laptop, it's not heavy. The web version works in a pinch, but its annoying for daily use.

You can also combine separate solutions, like OpenVPN to access your home network and then use remote desktop to the home computer (assuming Windows on both ends, similar options are possible on other systems). I've run RDP over SSH with port forwarding, and it worked perfectly fine (never tried audio) with the remote machine on 600 kb/s upstream. It does support audio, but I don't know if the USB redirection features (which would be useful with your tablet) works unless you run a Windows Server OS at home.

You can do RDP over VPN either with an RDP program or native server/client in windows (but then you'll need a Win Pro licenses for your desktop).

Over VPN, I would not expect a great experience, but it should work. I only say that because depending on the connection you have and the latency introduced by the VPN (could reduce latency, could increase it, just depends), it is not going to be a super smooth experience.

Then again, with a pretty decent internet connection on both ends and if there aren't many hops, it could be seamless. Just don't expect to hop on to a DSL connection in a hostel in Turkey and expect it to work well.

I am running Windows 7 Pro on the quad core PC and Windows 8 on the laptop. I am going to try Teamviewer. We have Verizon FIOS and we upgraded to their fastes router. I really don't care if I can access my network outside of our home network. I just don't want a lot of programs filing up the hard drive of my laptop which only has a 64GB SSD. I can go ahead and put the graphic software directly on the laptop but keep most other software on the quad core desktop.

Thank you.
