Hold fighter.

There was a video a while back. The big guy just tackled Mr.Kung Fu, got him in a hold until he broke Fu's shoulder.

Yeah, but I'm not very convinced that either of those guy were the "best" in their respective fighting form. Personally, I think it's going to be the person with the most actual streetfighting experience. Which would probably mean that he'd be a well-rounded fighter.

it would have to be a tournament style fight, or more than just a set of two persons.....and take an average/majority to get a more accurate answer to your question...

I am still pretty sure a hold fighter would still beat up a martial artist. You can't do very many kung fu moves in a choke hold. All the big guy needs to do is get him on the floor, and its finished.

All the martial artist needs to do is kick the guy's teeth down his throat when he steps within fifteen feet, and it's finished. :p

Realistically speaking, a kick in the face is a kick in the face. I'm sure any trained fighter can take a few hits here and there. All the big guy has to do is just run in, get a decent tackle and its gone. Once they are on the floor, the martial artist closes it. No matter how trained you are, in a fighting situation, you cannot hold your breath longer than someone can choke you.

Uhh . . . the last I heard, Juijitsu/BJJ/Judo/Systema was considered a "martial art", holding or not . . ..

You're basing your opinion on "the best fighter in the world" on one fight? Good job there, buddy. And I thought we've already established that the Kung Fu guy was far from the best of the martial art or the video was rigged. And even then, Kung Fu is just one of many, many martial arts. I would place my bets on a guy who has trained in Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. If you want a better example of qualified fighters in their fields (not just some schmo who made a wrestling home video), look at the fights Crocrop has been in. I remember him fighting Steve Herring (sp?) and just totally devastated him. And Steve Herring is a damn good wrestler too, but got owned.

How many fights start on the ground? It may be hard to knock someone else with just a kick or punch, but a very effective technique is to kick and break the knee...I would like to see someone try to wrestle with a broken knee.

I think a good martial artist would do everything they can to prevent the fight to go to the ground, stay at a distance. If someone's running at you, trying to tackle. Who's gonna just stand there & get tackled?

Okay, get the 2 best martial artist in the world and have them fight each other, put there video on the internet, so we can end this discussion. I posted a video showing how Mr. Fu gets creamed. Mr. Fu might not be the greatest, and I am sure the hold fighter wasn't the greatest either. Regardless, Mr. Fu got creamed. And I'm sure it wasn't rigged. Why would anyone let there shoulder get broken?

Ever watch UFC? Big guys almost always win those.

Look at Royce Gracie, hes won 2 UFC championships. His style of fighting? Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Space and Weight, Physical Attributes, Joint Locks, Passing the Guard, Submission and Strategy, Submission Holds, The Process of Becoming Skilled... etc

You can't dodge a tackle very quickly if you're balancing on one leg trying to kick with another.

Watch the video. Mr. Fu kicks, misses, and gets dropped.

EDIT: Oops, I meant "can't"

UFC is a poor example of a "fight" - they havce rules that favor the grappler; for instance, a fighter cannot knee another person if one of their knees is touching the ground.

Look at other MMA circles - PRIDE, for instance - there's a lot of stading play there, and such . . ..

MMA is MMA, and UFC/PRIDE isn't a "fight". I'm not saying that I'd want to fight them, as I don't have the physical fitness (not yet, anyway ;)) to face them, but there are certain rules you have to abide by . . . and a question; if a "martial artist" is considered "striking" arts, and a "hold fighter" is "grappling" arts (whoever came up with that idea is a flaming idiot, IMO - both are martial artists!), what would you consider styles that cover all the ranges?

Oh, btw, there ARE martial arts that use weapons.

In Ultimate Fighting Championship (international fighting competiion with virtually no rules) nearly all the fights end up as wrestling/grappling matches. Basically in any fight, if one fighter wants to turn it into a wrestling match, there's not much the other fighter can do to stop it.
