Best/Highest Quality MP3 Encoder?

EAC + LAME. If you're not too worried about the size of your files, you can twiddle the LAME settings to give you extremely high-quality mp3 files.

What do you all use/recommend?

jebus! how the hell can you stand to listen to that crap!?!?

lame --alt-preset standard.

You can actually plug LAME into the newer version of EAC...very handy. Just rip a whole bunch of stuff, sic LAME on it, and go to bed. You'll have nice, tasty mp3's when you get up in the morning.

Oh dear. Don't bother trying to rip/encode through Winamp, download CDex and use the LAME codec. Xing is the worst encoder ever made. And change your name immediately.

EAC is also nice, I just prefer CDex. Better interface, same result in the end.

How is the interface different? Looks pretty similar. Also: can you batch encode easily with this?

I used to use CDex with LAME @ --aps. But after I formatted in December, I've not been able to get it to work anymore. Says something about the file can't be found or something. I tried EAC with LAME and that doesn't encode at all for some reason. I've got everything set up right (I think) and I press the MP3 button, but all I get is a WAV. Anyone have any ideas? (edit: for either CDex or EAC; I don't care, I just want to be able to rip CDs)

If you want a "quick and dirty" program using the LAME engine, you can try FreeRIP from MG Shareware. It uses the LAME engine, and will fill out the ID tags using the freedb database. Its not the "best" one out there, but it will certainly make high quality MP3s very easily (oh, and using freedb is GREAT if you're converting your CD collection to MP3s). Oh, and FreeRIP is freeware. 🙂

CDex, as others have mentioned, is probably the best overall. It has quite a few options.

I finally got EAC working with LAME, but it only seems to encode in variable bitrate, despite that I have it set to encode at a constant 320. What gives?

Batch encoding is fairly straightforward, although there is one small inconvenience. Unfortunately, I don't recall what that is right now...

😱

I think I was having trouble getting it to replicate my directory structure, but I'm not sure. It's not something I do often, but if I remember I'll post it. And I just feel the interface is more an integrated ripper/encoder, EAC seems like 2 things mashed together. I haven't used EAC in a while though, so if they've improved it lately I'll re-evaluate.

why would you want constant 320? just use --alt-preset standard in the command line options box in the external compression tab
