If band was this cool in high school (and I had enough rhythm to play drums), I'd be a deadbeat drummer looking for a gig and a hit of smack right now.

Anyway, this is a live recording of a high school percussion quintet performing two tracks from DJ Shadow's groundbreaking album, "Endtroducing..." I found out about this album when it was #9 on SPIN magazine's "Top 90 Albums of the 90's," so even if drum and bass would normally turn you off, I urge you to at least give this a listen. It's simply amazing. These are very close to what they sound like on the album.

Here is the full clip:
67MB

Here is a shorter (1 minute) clip for those on dial-up:
1MB

Here are two short clips from the album versions of the first and second song (thank you Amazon.com) in order to compare.

Building Steam with a Grain of Salt

Changeling

And just in case you like the first two, here's my favorite clip from DJ Shadow's "Endtroducing...", one of the greatest albums of all time.

Finally, here's a short article about the whole thing with additional links.

21 people read this, and NOBODY replied? You could at least tell me it sucked.

I can't listen to it at work, but I think its an interesting idea. It probably keeps the kids much more interested and engaged than your standard concert/marching pieces.

Exactly. I can see myself actually spending time perfecting that kind of ensemble, rather than doing "The Saints Go Marching In" for the 100th time.

Yeah, it's a percussion quintet, not just drums.

After listening again, the drummer is really frustrating on the first song. When he has the HUGE solo, he just can't keep up. Again, I understand it's high school kids, but they're just so close to nailing it.

Yeah, I can think of some kids that were much better in my HS marching band.

LOL, that's what I was thinking.

Anyway, watched it. It's good music, of course, but the reason bands don't play more of this kind of music is because it's basically playing the same few notes or chords over and over and over again. Cool for listening to Downtempo, but  for learning how to play. But, ya, I think more bands should splice songs like this right between Souza and Leonard Cohen during recitals just to show range.
