I'd suggest you get a GOOD headphone amplifier and then a decent pair of headphones (aroudn $40)
The amp will make more of a difference than the headphones.
I'm probably gonna build a Class A headphone amp come fall :)

GOOD headphone amplifier

Where can I get on of these ? RadioShack ? BestBuy?

Will this "GOOD headphone amplifier " plug directly into my SoundCard ?

Grado SR-60's. People say that you don't need an amp for it.

Yup, sound card to headphone amp to headphones

Let me give you an example
I have a $20 pair of Sony MDR-cd180's....nothing special, but they wrap around your whole ear and have a decently big diaphragm.
I have it hooked up to my SB Live value, and they sound pretty decent.

When I had them hooked up to my speaker output on my SB 64 AWE (ISA), they had increadible bass that rattled the inside of my eardrum, and they were loud and CLEAN :)

I love my sony MDR-V600's. They ran me about 100 bucks. It was either that or the grados. I've had them for about 2 years.
you might want to try a site called 'headroom' they sell nice amps and nice headphones. Most of the stuff is really expensive.
I'm not sure of the address, do a google search

I just ordered the Grado SR-60's.

I guess now this thread will be devoted to people explaining the errors of my impatient decision.....???

From what I've heard grado's are great headphones. I've heard that you should buy an amp for them though, its supposed to improve the sound alot. I think that headroom is selling their portable amp for $100.
PM me if you have any more questions.
Or post here for the benefit of all!
Hope this helps,
Mike

I wanted to get the Grado SR-60's too, but couldn't find them anywhere for a decent price :(
I ended up getting the KOSS Sportapro's from Radio Shack instead (didn't have the Portapro's) I'm actually pretty impressed with them!

sennheisers are a bit too rich for my blood.
But apparently they have a 'budget' model, as i was looking at the headroom site, after i posted the link.
Has anybody had any experience with the cheaper models?

hm I have a question, my headphones (v700dj) are hooked onto an Aiwa bookshelf MD/D/Cassette/Radio Stereo, which are hooked to my computer through an optical cable through aureal superquad card. Do I need an amp to take full effect of my headphones? Or does the Aiwa do that for me?

While we're on the subject, anybody know a good pair of wireless headphones?

I was previously going to get Sennheiser HD495's, but the wireless fever hit me. :) I'm now looking at the Sennheiser RS40 and RS60. Does anybody have experience with these?

edit-- Gonna be hooked to a Hercules GTXP...

redwingsguy,
The aiwa headphone jack does the amping for you, but a seperate amp for your headphones are supposed to sound better. I'm not quite sure (audiophiles please feel free to correct me;)) but, when you have your amp plugged in to an audio-out the cd player or aiwa doesn't have to work as hard driving your headphones, so it can focus more of its power to producing good sound. Also seperate amps normaly have better quality components.
Again, if you know different, please correct me. But I'm pretty sure that im along the right lines
:D

<< I have experience with wireless ones, and I hated them all. Heavy and bulky. >>

Which ones? The Senns aren't that heavy. (they use a special battery instead of AAA's...)

Anyone have a pair of the Sennheiser HD495's and using them with an SBLive? Im planning on getting a pair for Quakecon and want to know how well they work without an extra headphone amp.
