The Beyerdanymic D770 Pros, and the Audio Technica a900s are legendary for this purpose, apart from being legendary Cans in their own right....

I have the Sennheiser HD497 but haven't used them much. A lot of people have them and would recommend them.

The Zalman 5.1's are good. I have them and they sound great for music and stuff. They aren't that expensive either. I don't know if that's something that you would consider, but there's my two cents.

Don't overlook the Grado headphones either. The SR-60s or SR-80s are some very efficient headphones. The don't over-emphasize the bass, but do sound excellent for music.

If you want compact, I recommend the Sony Fontopia MDR-EX71SL earbuds. I've got them, and they are great quality, the bass is the best I've heard out of any headphones. Check them out online, they have a unique inside-ear design that's actually really comfy. They have never felt uncomfortable to me. But if it's just for your computer, listen to the others. Although the cans they suggest are a bit large for portible use, just for a computer they would be great.

Sennheiser is definitely one of the top choices for music and gameplay. I own the HD497. Great quality/price ratio. The sound is far superior to anything else I've tested. Highly recommended.

You need a headset with a microphone for games like Counter-Strike online.

For mp3's, I wouldn't think a person would need high-end earphones, BUT I DON'T KNOW.

Here's what I use. Bank loan NOT required.

Plantronics
Audio 90 Stereo Headset with In-Line Volume and Mute Control
Model# AUDIO90
Item # N82E16826106009
